155 Existing Treatments for Other Conditions Identified for Lupus Clinical Trials
At LFNC's 36th Anniversary Gala and the First Purple Ribbon Awards, CEO of the Lupus Research Institute Peggy Dowd announced a partnership between the LRI and the Alliance for Lupus Research to pursue drugs and treatments already approved for other conditions for clinical trials for lupus patients. The process will allow those promising therapies to be approved by the FDA specifically for lupus treatment, giving physicians and patients new treatment options. Last week, LRI and ALR announced jointly that the project is moving at a fast pace, with 155 existing therapies already identified as having potential benefits for lupus patients.

The proactive initiative focuses on identifying new treatments from among those that are approved for other conditions. We are encouraged that progress has been even more rapid and comprehensive than anticipated with 155 potential therapies analyzed and identified from an initial analysis of 6,800 therapies approved for human use. A prestigious expert committee will soon review these results and prioritize the best candidates for clinical trials in lupus.
