Study Links Lower Vitamin D Levels to Worsening of Lupus Disease Activity
A large cohort study conducted by researchers at the Northwestern University of Chicago has found that lower levels of Vitamin D in lupus patients can lead to worsening of disease activity as well as increased cardiovascular risk. With vitamin deficiencies a common occurrence among patients with SLE, this study highlights the need for patients and their support networks to give special attention to vitamin intake.

Low levels of vitamin D among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were associated with greater disease activity and an increased likelihood of cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure and elevated lipids, a large cohort study found. [...]
 
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked with cardiovascular risk factors and established cardiovascular disease (CVD) in large epidemiologic studies, and SLE patients typically have low levels of the vitamin.
