Genetic Clue to Lupus Could Improve Therapies

A two-component, composite gene has been linked to lupus and other autoimmune diseases, and the link can help improve therapies or develop new ones to treat these diseases, a new research study by the University of Alabama at Birmingham has found. The Scientific American, writing on the research:
A level of healthy skepticism remains about the study, but its authors say that it shows promise. If the authors are correct, the study could open doors to new treatments for lupus and other auto-immune diseases. Read more about the study here.
Advocacy Works: Congress Adds Funds for Lupus Research
The Lupus Research Institute, LFNC's national research partner and the organizer of the annual advocacy in DC by lupus organizations across the country notes that our efforts have borne fruit as Congress has approved $2 million in new funding to help improve lupus diagnosis and treatment even within a tight budget. The statement by LRI speaks for lupus advocates across the country:

The new bill allocates funding to the Department of Health and Human Services to integrate the Lupus Initiative into the national healthcare system. Managed by the American College of Rheumatology, the Lupus Initiative was officially launched in 2013 by the Office of Minority Health, Office of Women's Health and the U.S. Surgeon General to improve diagnosis and reduce health disparities. As described in the report language accompanying the bill, the funding is "intended to engage healthcare professionals, educators, and schools of health professions in working together to improve lupus diagnosis and treatment through education."

"Lupus remains dangerously undiagnosed, underdiagnosed and misdiagnosed, especially in our minority communities," noted LRI CEO Margaret Dowd. "Our LRI patient advocates across America thank Congress for appropriating funds to train healthcare professionals, especially those on the front-lines, to spot this complex autoimmune disease early so patients can get appropriate care promptly."

Congress also approved $30 billion in funding for biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health. We thank Congress and the administration for working together to make sure that research and the development of new treatments goes forward, and for recognizing that our patients can't wait.
