Lupus Patients at Greater Risk of Pulmonary Hypertension
Pulmonary Hypertension - a condition that raises blood pressure in the arteries that bring blood to the lungs (also known as pulmonary arteries) - can be a life threatening complication in patients with SLE, and patients with SLE are at a greater risk for it, a study has found. The study, conducted by the Hacettepe University Hospital in Turkey.
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Pulmonary hypertension in SLE has a variety of causes. Diagnosing early and defining the cause of PH accurately can provide better clinical outcome in SLE. We investigated the causes and characteristics of PH in patients with SLE. [...]
Patients with SLE are at increased risk for PH. This study highlights the complexity of the differential diagnosis of PH in patients with SLE once again and emphasizes the importance of pulmonary thromboembolism as a cause of PH. One should investigate patients with SLE with unexplained symptoms and/or signs related to PH for possible treatable causes.
The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, can be found here. Please note that the study highlights the need for early diagnosis and treatment of PH in lupus patients for better outcomes. We encourage you to speak to your rheumatologist and other caregivers if you suspect you may be at risk.

Why We Do What We Do: A Heartfelt Testimonial
Ever wonder why we're here - even through the tough times, even with the funding difficulties - year after year? Ever wonder why LFNC never gives up? We don't. And here's why:
I attended my first support group after 15 years of living with Lupus. For the first time ever, I felt like I met others that genuinely understood what I am going through. A newly diagnosed teen asked me how I survived high school school with Lupus. I felt like I was talking to my 15 year old self again and wanted to hug her and tell her everything was going to be ok. I walked away inspired by each one of their stories & feeling stronger, braver.
What you just read is a testimonial one of our attendees at an LFNC support group meeting posted on her own Facebook page, without any prompting from anyone. Lives like hers is why we are here. Making a difference for her and countless others like her who feel they have nobody who understands.
We're here because we understand. We're here because we see courage every single day. That's why we never give up. This is why we do what we do.

Lupus Foundation Concludes Health Care Reform Workshop
On Tuesday, December 10, The Lupus Foundation of Northern California held a primer and workshop on California's implementation of health care reform, and on your new health insurance options, including Medi-Cal expansion.
Above: Helen Norman, a Certified Covered CA Enrollment Educator and a Member of the Silicon Valley Black Chamber of Commerce presents on Health Reform.
We wish to thank Tonya York of NAACP and Helen Norman of the Black Chamber of Commerce for conducting this very useful session, attended by some 30 members of the community, who learned about their options in California's health insurance marketplace. We also express our gratitude to the St. Maria Goretti parish for hosting us.
If you are in need of health insurance in the individual market, we encourage you to visit coveredca.com to see your options and sign up. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at 408-954-8600 and we will be happy to direct you to any available resources.
