Pregnant Lupus Patients on Corticosteroids Likely Safe from Adverse Effect to Pregnancy

A large study in Taiwan of patients who take corticosteroids to fight a multitude of diseases - including lupus - has found that the topical corticosteroids, in typical dosage, likely do not pose a threat to the expectant mother or to the fetus.

The researchers analyzed the records of 2658 pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years who had been prescribed corticosteroids 1 or more times between 1989 and 2006 and compared them with records of 7246 pregnant women of equal age who had not been exposed to corticosteroids.

The researchers found no significant overall association between corticosteroid use and orofacial cleft, preterm delivery, fetal death, low Apgar score, and mode of delivery.

Researchers do warn, however, that highly potent dosage of steroids may still pose a challenge to pregnancy. Read more about the study here.

The company is considering a phase II clinical trial following the success of the pre-clinical findings. Read more.
Fall Lupus Medical Conference
