A SILVER ($250) level gift will enable 10 patients to receive a free copy of the LFNC's twice-yearly newsletter.

Harvard Research Study Shows Possible Link Between Defective Dead Cell Removal and Lupus
As you know, no one can tell exactly what causes lupus. At least, not yet. But research is opening up frontiers to explore the possibilities on proximate causes. One of those research studies is exploring the link between how our immune systems assist in cleaning up dead cells and how a defect in that process can precipitate the occurrence of lupus. Harvard Medical School Assistant Professor Dr. Terry Means is the leader of the research team.
A molecule that is crucial to cleaning up dead cells in mice could shed light on autoimmune diseases such as lupus in humans, researchers say.
Dr Terry Means, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and colleagues, report their findings today in Nature Immunology.
Cells undergoing apoptosis (programmed cell death) are normally cleaned up and removed by immune system cells.
But in diseases such as lupus, scientists believe clearance of so-called 'apoptotic cells' can go wrong, and dead cells build up and trigger the immune system to start making antibodies against them, and other parts of the healthy body.
Antibodies get deposited in tissues, such as the kidneys, and this leads to inflammation, and other symptoms.
Here are more details on the study. The research is still in preliminary stages, and thus far has only been tried in mice. However, the concept that a faulty process within the immune system of cleaning up dead cells may cause one's body to produce auto-antibodies against those cells - and by extension the rest of the body - is a hypothesis that deserves further study.
