Lupus Nephritis Tamed without Steroids
Steroid treatments are often considered a necessary evil for those living with lupus. Corticosteroids can be effective in treating the disease, but over time, steroids cause their own severe side effects, which in turn have to be treated with other medication. So what if a lupus treatment could be devised that eliminated the need for steroids? Research seems to be moving that way, at least for lupus of the kidney, or lupus nephritis.

A combination regimen of rituximab (Rituxan) and mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept) successfully controlled lupus nephritis in 90% of patients without the need for oral corticosteroids, a prospective observational study found.

Specifically, 72% of a consecutive series of 50 patients achieved complete remission at a median of 36 weeks, according to Liz Lightstone, MBBS, PhD, and colleagues from Imperial College London.

Another 18% were in persistent partial remission at a median of 32 weeks, they reported in the August Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

Read the full report in MedPage here. According to the report, some 60% of patients with SLE are affected with nephritis, making this series study especially important.
