Lupus and Mental Health: Large Scale Study Reinforces Link Between Mood Disorders and Lupus
For those with lupus, it should come as no shock that the disease and its flares often affect not just the quality of life but the state of one's mind. Patients who deal with chronic pain, medications, and the challenges of auto-immune disorders daily can suffer an enormous effect on their psyche. A new large scale study in Europe has now confirmed the link between auto-immune diseases like lupus and mood disorders. Our partners at the Lupus Research Institute described the study:

An analysis of more than 3.5 million people in Denmark showed that the risk of developing a mood disorder was higher among people who had been hospitalized due to an autoimmune disease. Hospitalization due to a severe infection was another strong risk factor for a mood disorder. The study was reported online June 12 in the peer-reviewed journal, JAMA Psychiatry.

Help Us Ring in the New (Fiscal) Year
LFNC logo
Today is July 1, and today, we begin a new fiscal year. Over the past year, with your help, we served the northern California lupus community with patient education classes, support groups, medical conferences, exercise classes geared for lupus patients, published print newsletters, maintained an updated website, and spread the word for lupus awareness in the greater community (especially with the recently concluded 19th Annual Run &Walk for Lupus), and done all of that with a small staff and some incredible volunteers at a small San Jose office.

If you believe that our hard work is worth your support, then help us start off the new fiscal year right. There are a lot of ways to help:
  • Become a member and receive benefits like discounted entry to our conferences and a membership card. Whether you want to be a Platinum Member at $500 or an Individual Member at $30 or a level in between, you will be joining an organization where service is the way we live. Join today.
  • Make a one-time gift, or a monthly donation: support us with a Sustaining Gift of $1000, a Major Gift of $500, an Affirming Gift of $250, a Leading Gift of $100 or a Supporting Gift of $50. Make it a monthly donation or a one-time gift. Whatever your level of commitment is, every penny will help strengthen our commitment to you and the Northern California lupus community. Give now.
  • Make a gift in memory or in honor of a loved one: If you would like to make a gift to the LFNC in loving memory of friend or family member - or would like to give in honor of someone who's had an impact on you, please visit this page to make your gift.
Remember that if at any time you have any questions or would rather give your gift by mail or by phone, you can download the forms on our web site or call us at 408-954-8600.
