May is Lupus Awareness Month. This May, we at LFNC are asking you take up the cause of making everyone around you aware of lupus, its implications, the strength of the people living with it, and how to help beat it. There is a range of activities to get involved in. Here's what you can do.

Come to the "Heart of Lupus": 2013 Lupus Spring Mini-Conference.
Our Headliner: Laura Tarter, M.D.
Director, Stanford Lupus Clinic
 Dr. Tarter is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and Director of the Lupus Clinic at Stanford. Dr. Tarter earned her BA from Harvard College and medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency, Chief Medical Residency, and Rheumatology Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. She has authored a number of journal articles and her research interests include cardiovascular disease in SLE, biomarkers in autoimmune disease, and novel therapies. She recently received the Distinguished Fellow Award from the American College of Rheumatology. Dr. Tarter's presentation will provide an overview of the ways that lupus can affect the heart and an update on recommendations for decreasing the risk of heart disease in people with lupus. The conference will also feature other speakers -- experts and patients alike -- on lupus and related topics. Date and Time: Wednesday, May 15, 2013, 11 am to 4 pm. Help Us Raise Money for Research, Patient Programs and Services.
There are many ways to help us continue the critical services for patients families living with lupus in Northern California:

Grab dinner with your friends and family on Tuesday, May 14 at a restaurant participating in Dine Out for Lupus, and a portion of your bill will be donated to lupus research. More details and participating restaurants are listed here. - Contribute to the Lupus Challenge Fund. If you contribute today, your donation will be matched dollar for dollar. Double your impact, and donate today. Every dollar helps, and every dollar donated through the end of May is matched (up to a total of $10,000 in matching funds).

Buy tickets for the Annual Car Giveaway and win a C-class 2013 Mercedes Benz! Tickets are $75 each, three (3) for $200, or five (5) for $300. Funds raised from this drawing go to support critical education and services for patients. It's a great car, but an even better cause!

Register for the 19th Annual 5K Run & Walk for Lupus
Event on June 9, 2013.
 Northern California's largest (and funnest!) lupus awareness event is fast approaching. Have you registered for the 5K yet?
Time: Sunday, June 9, 2013 @ 9:00 am.
Place: West Valley College, Saratoga, CA.
Registration fee: $25 pre-registration, $30 on-site.
What you get: A free T-shirt, an awesome atmosphere, a sunny day with fellow runners and walkers, entertainment, and prizes!
But registering isn't all. You can form a team, raise money, bring the whole family, and have a ton of fun! Oh, and we're pet friendly and stroller friendly! When we said it's fun for the whole family, we're not joking!

- Ask your member of Congress to join the Congressional Lupus Caucus. The Congressional Lupus Caucus was formed by bipartisan members to help promote awareness of Lupus among members of Congress. Please ask your member to join. You can find your member by going to House.gov, and emailing or calling their office.
- Visit our website and stay updated.
