Dr. Dall'Era at LFNC Conference: Benlysta As Effective Among African Americans As Others
This past week saw one of our best attended Lupus Research and Treatment Update conferences. Held at the Women's Building in San Francisco, the conference heard from headliner Dr. Maria Dall'Era, who, along with delivering updates on lupus treatment and research, brought some good news on the new lupus drug Benlysta. Clinical studies are now beginning to show that the drug is as effective in African American lupus patients as in any other.
 | Dr. Maria Dall'Era Speaks to the 2012 Lupus Treatment and Research Update Conference in San Francisco, CA. |
Dr. Dall'Era referred to a study presented at the annual conference of the American College of Rheumatologists, a study that concludes:
In this analysis of black/AA pts receiving at least 6 months of belimumab therapy in clinical practices, clinical improvements were observed in a majority of pts with SLE across multiple manifestations. Steroid sparing effects were observed in most of the pts. Additional studies assessing belimumab effectiveness in black/AA pts with SLE are warranted.
You can read about the study in greater detail here. Dr. Dall'Era is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of the Rheumatology Clinical Research Center at the University of California, San Francisco. She is also the Director of the UCSF Lupus Clinic, UCSF Center Director of the Lupus Clinical Trials Consortium (LCTC), and Principal Investigator of the California Lupus Surveillance Project (CLSP). She also updated the conference on the Lupus Surveillance Project, a public health initiative to identify how widespread lupus is and to investigate the disease's demographic trends more fully. Find out more about the California Lupus Surveillance Project here.
In addition to Dr. Dall'Era, the conference also heard from a patient panel, a presentation on health care reform was delivered by Spandan Chakrabarti, and a talk on alternative medicine and therapies to treat stress and other conditions related to lupus was given by Susan Patick, who also teaches LFNC's English language Patient Education classes. The LFNC wishes to thank Dr. Dall'Era, our patient panel and other speakers at the conference, as well as attendees who made the event a success.
Funding support for this conference was provided by Amgen, Inc.

Other Ways to Give
As the year draws to a close, and the holiday season keeps us on our toes, it's time to think about a little giving. Here are a few more ways to give:
- Become a member (starting from just $30. Members joining or renewing at Sustaining or higher levels will get a calendar as a thank-you gift.).
- Make a personally significant donation.
- Ask your employer if they have a matching gift program, and multiply the impact of your gifts.
- Donate your used vehicle to the cause of lupus.
No contribution is too small, and you can be assured that as an organization that spends over 90% of your donations providing direct services, LFNC spends your money for its intended purpose.
