Mayo Clinic Develops Infection Risk Score for RA Patients with Co-existing Illness

The researchers at the Mayo Clinic continue to do excellent work. From a study published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, vol. 64, p. 2847, as described by the Johns Hopkins Medicine's Health After 50 newsletter:

Mayo Clinic researchers have developed an infection risk score that takes into account several factors that can raise infection risk, such as age, corticosteroid use, disease activity, inflammatory markers, previous serious infections, and coexisting serious illness.

Lupus patients are often known to suffer simultaneously from Rheumatoid Arthritis, and are often prescribed corticosteroids in high dosages. This in-depth study of risk factors will allow doctors to treat patients to reduce infection risk wherever possible.

Lupus Claims the Life of Sasha McHale, NBA Coach Kevin McHale's Daughter
purple ribbon It is with much regret and condolences to the McHale family that we bring you the news of the death of Sasha McHale, the 23-year-old daughter of Houston Rockets (NBA) coach Kevin McHale.

Ask anyone about Sasha and they all speak of her high-pitched laugh, her joyous nature, and while some knew she was battling lupus, a chronic auto-immune disease, very few outside the family's close circle realized how ill she had become, or how valiantly she battled its attack on her body. [...]

In the last year, Sasha fought lupus with every ounce of her being, cutting sugar from her diet, then gluten, and studying the background of any supplement known to reduce inflammation. Lupus assaulted her skin and joints, her lungs and her nervous system, but always she hit back even though the treatment (high-dose corticosteroids, potent cytotoxic drugs) can be more brutal than the symptoms.

Read more about the short yet full life of young Sasha. LFNC joins the entire lupus community in not only sending our condolences but in continuing our fight to end lupus with new determination, so that it is no longer able to claim victims like Sasha.
