'Tis the Season for Giving

We at the Lupus Foundation of Northern California hope that you have had a safe, happy and prosperous thanksgiving this year. We all know what follows Thanksgiving - shopping! 'Tis the season of deals. We have had Black Friday, and today is Cyber Monday.

But don't forget tomorrow - tomorrow is Giving Tuesday!

Giving Tuesday is a nationwide effort supported by the UN Foundation and organizations from across the country, including corporate sponsors, to remind Americans to give to our favorite charities. Check out our campaign at Giving Tuesday!

On the eve of Giving Tuesday, LFNC is asking for you to give $25, $50 or whatever you can to make sure we can continue to expand our reach and our services to the Northern California Lupus community. Over the past year, we have continued to provide critical patient education, services, research advocacy and awareness for the community, while adding to them via a new "Moving with Lupus" exercise class in partnership with Regan Moves (TM), a new youth support group, and a new calendar project to inform the community about facts about lupus.

We can't do this without you. Please remember to give, and find out all the ways you can helpAll of us at the LFNC wish you a wonderful holiday season.

Don't Skip Your Pap Test
purple ribbon In an alarming development, a new study has found that despite being at increased risk for cervical cancer, women with lupus get screened at a lower rate than the larger population.

Women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) do not appear undergo timely cervical cancer screening despite being at an increased risk for cervical dysplasia and persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, researchers reported here.

Based on an analysis of healthcare database information, rates of cervical cancer screening within 3 years were 75% among all eligible women versus 66% among SLE patients, according to Jennifer Stichman, MD, from the Denver Health Medical Center and the University of Colorado, and colleagues.

"Women who have lupus are at a higher risk of at least cervical dysplasia and they have a harder time getting rid of the HPV than women without lupus," Stichman toldMedPage Today at her poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.

If you're due for a Pap test, talk to your doctor about getting one. Don't skip it. You can read more about the study here.
