The Flu Season is Here - What to do for Your Vaccination
The flu season is upon us, and lupus patients need to take special care while speaking to their doctors about getting a flu shot. Being prepared and getting a flu shot can help you avoid some pretty nasty suffering this season, but keep a few things in mind:
- Please talk to your doctor about your flu shot. Given that lupus is an auto-immune disease and vaccinations are designed to affect the immune system, only your a medical professional can determine what form of (and whether) the flu vaccine is appropriate for you.
-
Please keep in mind that if you are a lupus patient, you most likely won't qualify for the flu mist, which is a live virus, but you more than likely can get the traditional shot. Again, please be sure to consult your physician.

New Proprietary Lupus Diagnostic Tool Available Throughout the Country
For as long as lupus has been in the medical vocabulary, diagnosis has been a difficult and often confusing process. That may be about to change a little for the better, however, with the nationwide availability of a new, proprietary tool that is designed to rule in lupus and - equally importantly - rule out other rheumatic diseases lupus patients can often be misdiagnosed with.
Exagen Diagnostics, Inc., a specialty focused molecular diagnostics laboratory that discovers, develops and markets proprietary tests for rheumatologists, announced today that it has received approval to offer its patent-protected Avise SLE diagnostic, SLE-Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, in New York. This certification means that the Avise SLE brand is now available to help lupus and connective tissue disease patients nationwide. Lupus is an autoimmune disease characterized by acute and chronic inflammation of various tissues of the body. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses that occur when the body's tissues are attacked by its own immune system.
Avise SLE is a five-marker diagnostic blood test developed to help rule in lupus and rule out other rheumatic diseases.

Would You Like to be Part of the Patient Panel for Our Upcoming Conference?
As you know, our winter mini-conference is coming up on December 18, and it promises to be a great educational experience for patients, families and health professionals alike.
As part of that experience, we are putting together a panel of lupus patients to share their experiences and engage the audience. We are looking for one more volunteer speaker for this panel - and we would like to invite you if you have been on the new lupus drug Benlysta at least since last year. As part of this panel, we will ask you to share your experience being on Benlysta, as well as with lupus in general.
Other information about the conference: Maria Dall'Era, M.D., will be headlining our conference. Dr. Dall'Era is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of the Rheumatology Clinical Research Center at the University of California, San Francisco. She is also the Director of the UCSF Lupus Clinic, UCSF Center Director of the Lupus Clinical Trials Consortium (LCTC), and Principal Investigator of the California Lupus Surveillance Project (CLSP). Her talk will focus on the latest treatment strategies and research studies on lupus and will share significant updates from the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Rheumatology to be held in Washington, D.C. in November.
Date and Time:
