Lupus Research Institute Awards Largest Private Grants for Research to Find Cause of Lupus
 | Drs. Ann Marshak-Rothstein at University of Massachusetts Medical School and Greg Barton at University of California, Berkeley |
The Lupus Foundation of Northern California, many of you know, is a member of the Lupus Research Institute National Coalition. We couldn't be prouder of that association as over the last week, the LRI announced the first $1 million grants funded by a private research institute in the field of lupus. The LRI grants - one of which is being awarded to UC Berkeley's Dr. Greg Barton - promise to fund research to zero in on the cause of lupus, using a class of proteins called TLR proteins crucial to the body's immune response.
The two Distinguished Innovator recipients, Drs. Ann Marshak-Rothstein at University of Massachusetts Medical School and Greg Barton at University of California, Berkeley, independently zeroed in on one family of proteins called Toll-like receptors as key triggers of the body's devastating autoimmune attack on itself that characterizes lupus. Because TLR proteins are essential in fighting any infection, how the body loses control over their activity is a fundamental question in immunology. Finding the causes of lupus, the prototype for autoimmune disease research, could have broad implications across a wide range of illnesses affecting millions.
