35 years. $35,000. Help us get there!

Since the day we opened our doors, it has truly been a privilege to be a witness not just to the trials that lupus patients face but their triumphs, too. Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives.

As we celebrate our 35th anniversary, we are launching our fund campaign with a goal of raising $35,000. As you can see on the chart above, over 90% of your contributions go straight to services, as we continue to strive to keep that focus. Please donate online, or if you prefer to donate by mail or fax, download this form and mail or fax it back with your generous donation to our office.

Recent developments in lupus research continue to give the lupus community renewed hope not only for the best quality of life among those living with the disease, but eventually a life without lupus. Please make your contribution today!

DNA - It's Not Just About Genes Anymore
For the longest time, scientists have thought of DNA as simply the determinant in one's gene sequencing, ignoring parts of the DNA that does not contain genetic information to help our bodies make proteins. But what has been previously dismissed as "junk" in our DNA may now turn out to be a determinant factor in detecting exposure to diseases and developing treatments.  To explain it more simply,

"It's Google Maps," said Eric Lander, president of the Broad Institute, a joint research endeavor of Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In contrast, the project's predecessor, the Human Genome Project, which determined the entire sequence of human DNA, "was like getting a picture of Earth from space," he said. "It doesn't tell you where the roads are, it doesn't tell you what traffic is like at what time of the day, it doesn't tell you where the good restaurants are, or the hospitals or the cities or the rivers."

But just what kind of impact could this finding have on medical treatment?

In one of the Nature papers, researchers link the gene switches to a range of human diseases - multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, celiac disease - and even to traits like height. In large studies over the past decade, scientists found that minor changes in human DNA sequences increase the risk that a person will get those diseases.

This is an exciting research development for lupus, and while we will wait to see what promising medical applications come out of it, it's a sign of great hope.

The Volt vs. Mercedes vs. BMW - Oh My!
Here at the Lupus Foundation, we have a long history of doing car drawings as a way to give our contributors a chance to win a first class vehicle while raising money for the Foundation. We think it only fair to let you decide which car you want for our next drawing. So will it be the environmental consciousness of the stylish Chevy Volt, the lap-of-luxury of the Mercecdes-Benz C300 4Matic Luxury Sedan, or the sports performance of the BMW 328i coupe? It's up to you!

Moving with Lupus
Leveraging small grant from the Walmart Foundation, the Lupus Foundation of Northern California has announced a series of exercise classes focused on patients with chronic pain. Led and developed by Regan Mizuno, a certified personal instructor and lupus patient herself (and her program is endorsed by rheumatologists), the classes will focus on reducing pain and giving participants the opportunity to reclaim more mobility.

We have already had two great, fun classes. Come join us, meet people just like you, and get active! Sign up here or call 408-954-8600, or simply show up!
