Message from ABWM President
Susan E. Dieter, RN, MS, CWS.

As more evidence emerges, so also comes change in wound care delivery. This includes the descriptions and terminology we utilize. When I first became ABWM certified in 1999, the terms, "Decubitus" and "Venous Stasis" were commonplace.

The American Association for the Advancement of Wound Care also published a Glossary of wound terminology in 2012 to assist in utilization of a common language of wound care. However, better clarification resulting in change in terminology has occurred recently as it relates to pressure injury.

Samaritan Medial Center - Wound Care Clinic
Now Open!

The ABWM would like to congratulate James V. Stillerman, MD, who is a Certified Wound Specialist Physicianand his team in the opening of the Samaritan Wound Care Center, an outpatient center of Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, NY.

Samaritian Wound Care Center

The development of the Samaritan Wound Care Center was due to the fact that over 26 million diabetics in America, and 20% of those people will develop a wound in their lifetime. This growing need for this service led to the development of the Samaritan Wound Care Center which would be a facility that provides comprehensive, advanced wound care in a local setting with on-site surgical back-up and intervention, avoiding the need for transfer or outside treatment.

The center, which opened in July of 2015 in partnership with Healogics, currently has 250-300 wound care patients. Dr. Stillerman and his team are excited to be able to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to the community. During this treatment, the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen while relaxing in a pressurized chamber. HBOT is approved for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, skin grafts and flaps, acute traumatic injury, and osteomyelitis (bone infection). HBOT also is used to treat patients experiencing complications following radiation therapy.
