President's Message
Walter Conlan, III, MD, CWSP

Colleagues,

As I'm sure you know the ABWM recently launched a non-profit foundation - The ABWM Foundation - for the purpose of creating a pathway for wound care professionals to have adequate knowledge, skills and abilities to provide effective wound care.

The Foundation is currently offering practice exams for the Certified Wound Care Associate, Certified Wound Specialist, and Certified Wound Specialist Physician exams. Furthermore, the Board is looking to provide additional resources (review courses, e-learning, study guides, etc.) for candidates to prepare for the CWCA, CWS and CWSP examinations. For additional information on the ABWM Foundation, please visit the ABWM Foundation website.

My experience volunteering for ABWM has always been a positive one. Not only have I benefitted from my time spent, but so has my practive and my patients. If you are interested in being considered a candidate for the ABWM Foundation Board of Trustees, please fill out the Candidate Statement and return it with a copy of your C/V to ABWM Foundation Executive Director Christopher M. Murphy at cmurphy@abwmcertified.org or via fax at 202-530-0659.

Being on the ABWM Foundation Board of Trustees is a time commitment. Typically, the Board meets once a month via conference call (early morning, lunch hour or evening). The Board will meet in person twice a year (April/May and September/October) for a one-day meeting (typically fly-in the day before the meeting). The ABWM Foundation will reimburse any travel expenses for the in-person Board meetings that are not reimbursable by your employer. You must hold a current CWCA, CWS or CWSP to be eligible and all materials must be received by April 15, 2013.

Sincerely,

Walter Conlan, III, MD, CWSP

Certified Wound Specialist®
Your Questions Answered!

Who is eligible to take the CWS®?

Any licensed healthcare professional with a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree, with three or more years of clinical wound care experience.

Examples: physical therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers.

Why should I take the CWS® as opposed to other wound care exams?

The CWS® is given by the American Board of Wound Management, one of the original and most respected wound certification boards. ABWM is a multidisciplinary organization that believes in certification across the continuum of wound management. Your eligibility for this exam is determined by your education and your experience only.  The ABWM is a full voting member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence.

What are the costs associated with the CWS®?

The price of the initial certification examination is currently $575.00.

After 10 years, you will be required to recertify by examination at the current cost.

You are required to renew your certification annually by completing at least 6 hours of continuing education related to wound management, and by paying the annual renewal fee of $150.

When can I sit for the exam?

ABWM now offers year-round testing, so you may apply at any time by completing the  Application in our Candidate Handbook.  After your application is approved, you may schedule your testing date, time and location at one of our 170 testing centers throughout the country any time during the following six months.

How do I prepare for the exam?

ABWM provides a comprehensive Content Outline for the exam to help guide your self-study.  You can access the outline and an online practice assessment in the How to Prepare section on the website.  You can also make use of current journal articles, related text books, and in-person or online courses.  The ABWM does not promote any of these courses or materials in particular.

Continuing Education Audit

ABWM requires at least six hours of continuing education annually to maintain certification. ABWM conducts annual audits of 5% of renewals. Diplomates and Associates may be randomly selected for a Continuing Education Audit. Completing the audit is easy to do! If you are selected you will be notified by U.S. mail and asked to provide documentation (attendance certificate, letter of attendance, program from course, etc.) of your continuing education. If you fail to respond or provide the requested documentation your certification could be revoked. The purpose of the audit is to help maintain the integrity of the ABWM and our certifications.
