Greetings and Happy Belated New Year!

I hope that all is well with you and your families in 2013. How are you coming along with your New Year's resolutions? Making it to the gym every day? Off of junk food? Stopped procrastinating? I certainly have a lot to work on... I think that we all do.

As far as being wound care professionals, one of our goals is to further wound care as a vital part of the healthcare industry. To accomplish this we need to open ourselves up to education, learn as much as possible, focus on patient and family concerns, improve our outcomes, and make sure administrators recognize our achievements. I am hoping that all of you can attend a major wound conference this year; getting outside our usual "four walls" really opens us up to what's new. Attending conferences also helps to reaffirm that we are doing what's right for our patients. All of us need to review our outcomes and see where we can improve. If we don't set the bar high we end up getting dragged down.

One way we can become a better practitioner is to get those around us certified. Wound care is multidisciplinary. To attain a high level of patient care we all need to be fully invested. Those who have become certified through the ABWM have clearly demonstrated that dedication. When everyone involved in patient care is dedicated, only good things will happen!

Resolve to get certified, expand education and continue to improve patient care in 2013.

Sincerely,

Walter Conlan, III, MD, CWSP
