Google Compare for Car Insurance Arrived

Insurance Journal 03.05.15

Google Compare for car insurance was introduced on Thursday in California, "with more states to follow," the tech giant said.

"Google Compare for car insurance provides a seamless, intuitive experience for connecting with your customers online," the company said in a news release sent out Wednesday evening that was under embargo until today. "Whether you're a national insurance provider or one local to California, people searching for car insurance on their phone or computer can find you along with an apples-to-apples comparison of other providers all in as little as 5 minutes."

Named as partners in the release are carriers Mercury Insurance and MetLIfe. Participation in Google Compare is based on a flexible cost-per-acquisition model, but payment isn't a factor in ranking or eligibility, according to Google.   See Google's Rate Comparison tool and  Read More Here

Berkley: Google's Entry Into Auto Insurance Should Frighten Agents
"I'm here to tell you that you're screwed."

That Google is getting into auto insurance should have the voice in the head of every agent who sells personal auto coverage saying: "Be afraid, be very afraid."

OK, that's not exactly how W.R. Berkley Corp. CEO William R. Berkley put it when speaking before an audience at the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas' Joe Vincent Management Seminar in late January. What he said was: "I'm here to tell you that you're screwed."

One problem is that Google designs self-driving cars, which gives it a huge advantage in the auto insurance market, he said. "It means Google knows the rules for driving on every road in the United States and they're working on Europe. So they know that on this block you can go 25 and on the next block you can go 35. They know where you can take a right turn, a left turn or whatever," Berkley said.

Berkley details some of Google's advantages in the market

Google could be working with CoverHound, which currently offers online quotes for multiple insurers including Hartford, esurance, 21st Century, Travelers, Safeco, National General, Progressive, Foremost, Plymouth Rock and others.

Trucker Crashes While Pulling Tooth

Alabama authorities say a tractor-trailer crashed on Interstate 20 near Tuscaloosa because the driver lost control while he was pulling one of his teeth.

The Alabama Highway Patrol says the truck driver told troopers he had taken his hands off the wheel to pull a loose tooth when he wrecked. The crash report states: "He had the tooth in his shirt pocket as proof."

The tractor-trailer veered off I-20 into a ditch late Sunday and smashed into a tree. The crash shut down a stretch of interstate for about 11 hours until a single lane reopened Monday morning.

Authorities say the 57-year-old driver wasn't seriously hurt.

Michigan Pot Grower Failed to Tell Insurer- Must Reimburse Fire Claim Payment

An insurance company that didn't know about a medical marijuana nursery in a Bay City, Mich., basement can recover more than $130,000 paid after the house was destroyed by fire.

A federal appeals court upheld a decision by U.S. District Judge Thomas Ludington. Kasey McDermott's home burned down in 2012 when her then-husband accidentally started a fire while smoking oil extracted from marijuana leaves.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A Colorado Springs insurance agent is moving her business because of a marijuana lounge that opened next door.
Liz Hanson has worked at the Farmers Insurance office on North Circle Drive for nearly 20 years, but she's moving to a new location this week.
"Everybody knows we're here but I can't stay. I absolutely can't stay the way things are," she said. Hanson said loud music and marijuana odor is starting to affect her business.

Jail Bird
Former Farmers Agent gets seven years in prison for fraud
A Chicago man was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for selling fraudulent insurance polices in Orange County to fund a lavish lifestyle.

Between 2009 to 2013, Jacob Richard Bonzer, 28, collected more than $900,000 in commissions and premium payments for the fake polices, and created fake insurance companies to defraud customers, a statement from the Orange County District Attorney said.
Investigators found 128 Farmers Homeowners policies that listed addresses to his office, and had names of those not associated with the properties. Farmers paid him $46,000 for the polices, but he never returned the money. More

Oklahoma Attorney General Pruitt announced that Oklahoma's Emergency Price Stabilization Act is now in effect for 25 Oklahoma counties after Gov.

Mary Fallin declared a state of emergency due to tornadoes, severe storms, straight-line winds and flooding that hit the state on March 25.

State Farm Given Okay to Use Drones for Damage Assessments

State Farm has become the first insurer in the United States to receive FAA permission to test Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for commercial use.

The decision provides the Illinois-based insurer the opportunity to research drone technology and potentially deploy it in ways that could benefit customers. State Farm plans to explore the use of unmanned aircraft to assess potential roof damage during the claims process and respond to natural disasters.

The company filed an application with the FAA to test drones in late last year. At the time, it asked for two exemptions. One to allow the company to test drones at a private State Farm test site in central Illinois and the other would allow it to use drones during catastrophes.

Farmers Insurance Stadium?
Proposed Farmers Field in Los Angeles.
Dead L.A. Stadium Issue Results in $5.8M in
Free Publicity for Farmers  IJ March 11, 2015

Farmers Insurance Group received nearly $6 million in free media exposure for putting its name on a downtown Los Angeles stadium that will never be built.

Anschutz Entertainment Group this week announced that it was no longer pursuing a $1.2 billion National Football League stadium project - to be called Farmers Field - in the country's second largest media market. The Farmers name became attached to the project in 2011 after the insurance company agreed to a 30-year naming rights deal that the Los Angeles Times said was worth about $700 million.

The Farmers payments weren't set to begin until the 65,000- seat stadium was completed. The past four years of discussion about the stadium - including mentions on television programs, social media and news websites - has generated $5.84 million in exposure, according to sponsorship evaluation firm Front Row Analytics.

"It has to be one of the best non-naming rights, naming rights deals ever," Eric Smallwood, senior vice president at Philadelphia-based Front Row, said today in an interview.

AEG said this week that it is no longer in discussions with the NFL or any teams regarding the stadium project. The company owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz said it believed an agreement couldn't be reached to satisfy all parties.

Farmers Insurance Chief Marketing Officer Mike Linton said the company has no plans to pursue a sponsorship deal with another NFL team or stadium.

The transcript must show CE COMPLIANT, at least 3 business days before the licensee will be allowed to process their renewal application online. Best Practice: CE should be completed at least 30 days prior to the license expiration date to allow ample time for the CE provider to report the credit. Resident Producers (excluding Title producers) are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education. The 24 hours should consist of 3 hours of ethics, 2 hours of legislative update and 19 hours of producer general. A licensee holding a property line of authority is required to complete a 1 hour earthquake course, which will be counted as part of the 19 hour general requirement.

Additional Selling CE Requirements (counts toward 19 hours of producer general credit):

  • Producers that sell, solicit, or negotiate long term care insurance must take the initial 8 hour long term care partnership course prior to offering this type of product and complete a 4 hour long term care partnership course each renewal cycle thereafter. http://okltcpartnership.org/)
  • Producers that sell, solicit, or negotiate Annuity products are required to take a onetime 4 hour course on Annuity products.

Customer Service Representative (CSR)

is required to complete 13 hours of continuing education. The 13 hours should consist of 3 hours of ethics, 2 hours of legislative updates and 8 hours of producer general. A licensee holding a property line of authority is required to complete a 1 hour earthquake course, which will be counted as part of the 8 hour general requirement.

Are you age 65 and been a licensed agent for 20+ years? you may qualify for the free Okla. CE Mentoring Course worth 24 hrs credit hours and takes 10 minutes to complete.  See CE Mentor letter HERE by Commissioner John Doak with short form on page 2. This became available in 2011.

More than 2,500 Oklahoma Agents Take Earthquake Coverage Class

"Consumers need to understand these policies," Doak said. "This is major, catastrophic coverage. It's not light coverage. You really have to have major damage or something significant to happen."

Doak said he is concerned that a growing number of policies exclude from coverage earthquakes that are induced by man-made activity.   Read more here
