FIG Exchanges lose over 685,000 PIF in First Six Months of 2013
Has Farmers finally hit the crossroads on hiking rates on a fewer number of policyholders? Or, could it be X-FIG-agents, now independent, soliciting their loyal customers of the past? Or, is it continued rate Hikes?
HY noted in graph below = Half Year including the 1st & 2nd Qtr of Zurich's Reports or first six months of 2013. The graph is based on thousands so, any numbers in front of a comma are millions with thousands behind the comma.
Several Simple Math Errors Noted in Graph
If you do the math comparing total AUTO for 2012 & 2013, the PIF loss is actually 539,000 due to a simple calculation error on non-standard auto that should be 154k. Business insurance also has a a subtraction error on Independent Agents who actually lost 21,000 PIF for a corrected total of 32,000 business policies. And, again, on Specialty another flaw in the calculations where the total gain should be 65,000. The company's PIF HY count should be 620,000 loss in PIF in first 6 months of 2013, according to their magic math. (Figuring the PIF "In Thousands of Policies" allows lost policies in the 'hundreds' to be excluded from the total, anywhere from 0 to 999 in every category shown.) 664,000 Autos, Homes & Businesses Evaporate from FIG Agencies in 6 mos.
However, the gains in PIF in Specialty tends to skew the actual PIF losses for the other categories. Just in Home & Auto, the total corrected PIF loss is 652,000. Add in 'Business' at 11k + 1k for 'Other' (Life?) and the total on the lost FIG Agency PIF is 664,000 in first six months of 2013. Add the 21k of lost IA business PIF = 685k loss to the exchanges. The shocker is all the (unknown#) of new business written during the first six months of 2013 that offsets the real lost numbers shown in the categories of the graph. So, the 65,000 gain in Specialty written from Jan through Jun 2013 skews the real total of lost business- by an additional 65k It's called magic math, similar to pizza mystery meat. Transparency here is lacking! And, this loss occurred in only the fist half of the year of 2013. What will happen in the last half of the year with this management company? -ed The source of the graph below is from the Zurich 1st & 2nd Qtr 2013 Report.
Here's a PIF loss breakdown by category for the 1st & 2nd Quarters of 2013 (with simple math errors* corrected)
2012 Ending PIF March 31 PIF Net +/- PIF March 31 June 30 PIF Net+/- PIF June 30 Total Jan-June
AUTO 11,558k 11,331k -227k 11,049k -282k -539,000*
Std 10,450k 10,268k -182k 10,065k -203k -385,000
Non Std. 1,138k 1,063k -75k 984k -79k -154,000* ========================================================================================
Homeowners 5,131k 5,079k -52k 5,018k -61k -113,000 ========================================================================================
Business 627k 609k -18k 596k -13k -32,000*
Excl. Agt 432k 424k -8k 421k -3k -11,000
Ind. Agt 195k 185k -10k 174k -11k -21,000* =========================================================================================
Specialty 2,881k 2,907k +26k 2,946k +39k +65,000*
Other 316k 315k -1k 315k 0k -1,000 =========================================================================================
Totals: 20,542k 20,240k -302,000k 19,923k -318,000k - 620,000*
If the +65,000 positive figure for specialty is removed from the loss count the total lost PIF jumps to 685,000. If the agents wrote 65,000 NB in all other categories the loss figure would jump to 3/4 million (750k) lost PIF in 1st 6 mos.

Zurich Ad Campaign Seeks to Restore Insurer to Normality
IJ 09.06.2013
Rueters: By rolling out television, print and billboard marketing campaigns on Monday, Zurich Insurance is aiming to advertise business as usual after a suicide and resignation in the Swiss-based insurer's top ranks.
But behind the scenes, Chief Executive Martin Senn is working to regroup before results, repair shareholder confidence, and update investors on three-year targets, all while the firm puts its corporate culture under the microscope. The company is due to release third-quarter results on Nov. 14.
As a Dec. 5 deadline creeps closer for updating investors on targets the company will likely miss, the spotlight is on how Senn will pilot the company after the suicide of its finance chief Pierre Wauthier last month and the subsequent resignation of its chairman Josef Ackermann days later.
Ackermann, a former Deutsche Bank CEO, was named in a suicide note. Zurich's board is looking into whether any undue strain was placed on Wauthier and into the insurer's wider corporate culture and behavior.
Now the 56-year-old Senn must reassure employees and investors and replenish the top ranks at Zurich.
"Expectations of him are very high," said Dominik Studer, an analyst at J. Safra Sarasin who has a neutral rating on the stock.
"He's firmly in the saddle, but at the moment he has to cope with some demanding tasks," Studer said, citing the update of the earnings targets for Zurich's U.S. unit Farmers and non-life, as well as finding a new CFO.
Zurich said in August that meeting three-year performance targets, which include profitability and costs, for its general insurance and U.S. segment Farmers would be "challenging".
Wauthier and Ackermann had differed over how to communicate the likelihood of Zurich missing the targets to shareholders in its second-quarter results.
Tom de Swaan, whose first move as acting chairman had been to launch the review into pressures on Wauthier, was appointed chairman on Wednesday.
Any external review would likely call on a well-known name to undertake a forensic examination by poring over emails, minutes from meetings and other documents, as well as interviewing employees, people with knowledge of similar reviews told Reuters.
"(The review) will take as long as is necessary to clear up the circumstances so there is no end date planned as of now," a spokesman for Zurich said, adding the company would not share details on possible external advisors or the process and scope of the review.
BRAIN DRAIN
Since Ackermann became chairman in March 2012, several top-level managers have left Zurich, giving rise to talk of a brain drain, sources inside the company say.
Former general insurance chief Mario Greco left a year ago to become head of Italian insurer Generali. The head of Zurich's life insurance arm, Kevin Hogan, quit to join AIG in August, the same month Zurich's chief of staff Ann Haugh left after just a year in the role.
Senn, a former banker at Credit Suisse who, according to Swiss magazine Bilanz, was recruited by Ackermann, has become the lone figurehead in the weeks following the suicide and Ackermann's exit, battling to calm both investors and employees.
In an interview with Swiss newspaper NZZ am Sonntag the weekend after Ackermann's resignation, Senn said he was working to blow away the "clouds" over the company and restore its reputation.
Entitled "for those who truly love", Zurich's advertising campaign is set to be rolled out in Switzerland this week. Zurich declined to give details of the cost of the campaign.
Its launch was delayed after Wauthier was found dead at his lakeside home outside Zurich on Aug. 26, three sources told Reuters.
The campaign, which has been in development since the start of the year, will mark a move back to normality, a Zurich spokesman said.
But within the company, Senn has been sending employees daily messages of reassurance by email, entreating them not to speculate on recent events, a source told Reuters, a request he also made when addressing mourners at Wauthier's company memorial service.
In his first public comments since resigning from Zurich's board, Ackermann said it was unfair to blame him for what he called a surprise tragedy.

Florida's Citizens Property Insurance Corp. CEO Barry Gilway.

Citizens Insurance CEO Tells Policyholders:
"Please Leave"
By Maria Mallory White, Sun Sentinel 09.15.2013
Sept. 13--Barry Gilway is a decidedly rare breed: A chief executive who really wants you to take your business to one of his competitors.
Gilway, a panelist in an insurance workshop Friday in Delray Beach, FL. advised Citizens' customers to think twice about staying with the state-backed insurer.
"I hate to say this as the CEO, but when you take a look at your Citizens policy, you do not have good coverage," Gilway told a group of 40 assembled at the Emma Lou Olsen Civic Center in Pompano Beach.
Some 400,000 current Citizens policyholders will receive letters giving them the option to leave Citizens and go to one of 10 companies the state Office of Insurance Regulation has given permission to remove from Citizens' roster by November 5.
The workshop was the last of four hosted this week by state Sen. Maria Lorts Sachs who invited Gilway, other government officials and industry leaders to discussion insurance questions and concerns with South Floridians.
Gilway estimated another 50,000 to 100,000 policies could be chosen by private carriers to leave Citizens by year end. As a result, the insurer may be on its way to dipping below 1 million policies before the New Year, he said.
"We'll be down close to 800,000 policies in Citizens because the market is growing stronger and stronger."
Residents in attendance voiced concerns about hikes in premium prices, confusion about what is and isn't covered in their policies, frustration over receiving limited background on the takeout companies and not knowing whether they were required to take a company's offer to leave Citizens.
"You absolutely have a choice," Gilway said. "The takeout letter is not kicking you out of Citizens" but instead is alerting policyholders that a private company is interested in their business.
"You accept -- and this is controversial -- through a negative response: If you don't respond to the letter, you go [into] the take out company. But it is not a mandatory move."
Currently at 1.2 million policies statewide, Broward County currently is home to 104,083 Citizens policies, and Palm Beach County has 62,333.
Separately, Citizens announced Friday hiring a new chief financial officer and a new chief risk officer.
Jennifer Montero, who has been interim CFO since June, officially retains the position. Former board of governors member John Rollins will take on the top risk post. Rollins, who resigned from the board Monday, worked as Citizens' director fo analytics from 2006 to 2007.

10 years ago Texas went through the mold crisis. Agent morale was at an all time low [with a moritorium on home insurance] as morale appears to be now throughout the company. An agent named Bob, in my district, was so down and depressed about the situation that he committed suicide. His senseless death broke my heart. I had been in his office a week earlier with Gregor Scott. Gregor had come to town to try to help agents through the crisis.
Sep 13, 2013
I just got back from Toppers. When I flew to Las Vegas I was angry, depressed and not very positive. As the convention ended I felt like a light had been lit at the end of the tunnel. Roy Smith seems to get it. He is one of us. A 28 year farmers guy, not one of the many outsiders that have screwed things up for us. Roy and I had two opportunities to speak to each other. In the first he said it was time to "execute" and not just talk about "transformation". In the second conversation he said that he has asked his staff to get out of their offices and to get into the field. Pretty **** refreshing if you ask me. He doesn't need us to complain about the situation. He knows the numbers and they speak for themselves.

Growth from the cannibalization other agents at the discretion of a pal DM is not growth by excellence or superiority. Dictators remain in power because they don't mind doing what they have to do and like to do to their subjects to remain there. Nothing different here - there is no "secret sauce". That's what separates those who do what they do because they want to do things right and grow organically or those that prefer to grow by consuming those around them and that's the environment we are in. Older, tenured agents are being tormented, isolated, and drained - whatever tactic it takes to get them to leave so their business can be redistributed to the cult-like followers who will drink whatever kool-aid is put before them.

The Fight Fo r Policy Ownership
Must be aggressive
There are times when what agents don't know can hurt them. And this is one of them. I refer to the all-too-often overlooked, and recently targeted, ownership of policy "expirations" - policy, policyholder and account information.
At the crux of this issue is the guiding tenet of the independent agency system: independent agencies own the policies they write. They are the principal asset of an independent agent's business and, without exaggeration, their livelihood. Read more here.

Joplin Rebuilding Since 2011 Tornado: About $837M Spent
September 4, 2013
About $837 million has been spent on construction in Joplin MO., since the May 2011 tornado, including starts on more than 1,100 new homes, according to city building permit data.
The figures include construction done throughout the city and are based on building permit statistics released periodically by the city. The latest numbers were for April through July, The Joplin Globe reported.
City data showed the city issued building permits totaling $104.6 million for fiscal year 2013 up to July. That follows a total of $554.8 million in permits in fiscal 2012 and $192.4 million in fiscal 2011, the vast majority of which were issued after the May 22 tornado that year, which damaged a large section of the city and killed 161 people.
More than two-thirds of the building permits for new homes since the tornado were issued in the tornado zone. However, since November 2012, 151 permits for new homes were issued, a significant slowing of home construction compared with fiscal years 2011 and 2012. In fiscal 2011, 441 permits for new homes were issued, almost all of those after the tornado; in fiscal 2012, 552 permits were issued.
Crystal Harrington, head of the Home Builders Association of Southwest Missouri, said initiatives such as the Joplin Housing Assistance Program, which will begin this fall, will improve home construction.
"These are middle-income grants for the down payment and closing costs on a house," she said of the program, which she thought could help build 400 new homes. "If 20 percent down is needed to construct a home, these grants could amount to $20,000 to $30,000 each. This could help a family making $60,000 or less to build a brand new house."

New Jersey Court: Text Sender Can Be Held Liable in Crash
September 4, 2013 IJ
A New Jersey court says a person who knowingly sends a text to a driver can share liability if the driver causes an accident. The ruling last week came in the case of a couple severely injured when their motorcycle was hit by a teenager who was texting while driving in 2009. The injured couple settled their lawsuit against the driver for $500,000. They also sued his girlfriend, who sent him a text message. The appeals court says someone who texts a motorist can potentially be liable if the sender knew the recipient would view the text while driving. Nevertheless, the judges upheld a lower court ruling that dismissed the lawsuit against the girlfriend. The court says the couple didn't show evidence that the girl knew her boyfriend was driving or would look at her text. |

JOKE TO MAKE YOU LAUGH
A woman buys several gallons of milk from the milkman one day.
"Why do you need so much milk?" the mailman asks.
The lady replies, "I heard that taking baths in milk makes you healthier and prettier."
The milkman asks, "Would you like the milk pasteurized?"
She answers, "No, just up to the neck".
JOKE TO MAKE YOU LAUGH
A burglar breaks into a house. He starts shining his light around looking for valuables. Some nice things catch his eye, but as he reaches for them, he hears, "Jesus is watching you."
Startled, the burglar looks for the speaker. Seeing no one, he starts putting the valuables in his bag. Again, he hears, "Jesus is watching you."
This time, he sees a parrot. "Who are you?" the burglar asks.
"Moses," the bird replied.
"Who the heck would name a bird Moses?" the man laughed.
"The same kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus."
