The March on Washington turns 50

Though the 50th anniversary for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom has passed, we need to continue "revisiting" the March to explore how successful it was. Where are we now? Class 9 students were interviewed by Transformational Journey speaker Shukree Tilghman for his PBS documentary, "The March @ 50."

Join Our Newest Adventure: The Cultural Leadership Book Club

Join us for our first book club meeting on Monday, October 21 at 5:30pm. We will be reading Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.

Then, on Friday, November 1, join Cultural Leadership at the Missouri History Museum for "An Evening with Michelle Alexander." This is a public event and seating is first come, first served, so please arrive early.

For more information about the Cultural Leadership book club and to RSVP for a spot in our limited seating environment, please contact Maggie at mharris@culturalleadership.org or 314.725.3222.
Training Facilitators to Lead Difficult Conversations

At their August Retreat, Class 9 spent the weekend learning how to facilitate discussions around difficult issues, which culminated in Saturday night's "Courageous Conversations."

Students worked with their more than 50 audience members to discuss issues of privilege and oppression, racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, lookism, and more.

Many thanks to United Hebrew Congregation, who hosted us for this retreat. Rabbi Rosenberg and Lee Rosenberg led our students in Havdalah ceremony on Saturday evening and Cantor Eichaker stopped by for the Courageous Conversations!

Now that they're trained, our students are eager to begin facilitating similar conversations in our community. If you have an opportunity that you would like them to be part of, please email mharris@culturalleadership.org or call (314) 725-3222 to schedule your facilitation.

A Time for New Beginnings

As we begin a new year (whether it is school or 5774), please continue supporting the "new beginnings" that Cultural Leadership provides its students and our community.

Looking for curious, courageous, "change the world"-type teens!

Join our tenth class of "troublemakers of the best kind"! During our year-long, educational, leadership program students become social justice activists and change agents, through the eyes of the African American

null

and Jewish experience. Students meet over the course of a year - 460 hours in all, which includes three weekend retreats, monthly meetings, and a three week summer transformational journey covering much of the east coast and the "deep south." Cultural Leadership opens students' eyes to problems that often go unnoticed in our communities, such as racism, anti-Semitism, poverty and oppression.

If you are a sophomore or junior in high school and would like more information on the program, or an application, visit our website or contact the office at (314) 725-3222.
