Class 9's Opening Retreat
 | |
The 30 students who compose Class 9, at their opening retreat in January in the lovely Drury Hotel - Creve Coeur!
|
It's no coincidence that we begin each class of students during the long weekend that celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. His dream is our dream - and this weekend is our first chance to make that dream come true for each Cultural Leadership class. During the weekend-long retreat, students attended MLK-themed services. For Shabbat service, students went to United Hebrew and Sunday morning service was at Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church. They learned about each other. They learned about identity. They learned about power, privilege, and oppression. And they built their own version of Dr. King's "beloved community."
Regular Sunday programming began February 10, hosted by the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis with guest speaker Dr. Katrina Thompson of Saint Louis University.

Last year, we had over 35 participants and this year we are on our way to even more - we have 15 people already registered! In 2012 we raised over $8,500 and the goal for 2013 is to raise $15,000 but we need you to participate to reach our goals!
Support Cultural Leadership by running or walking the 5K on Saturday, April 6th, or the half/full marathons on Sunday, April 7th. Register soon - the team relay has sold out and the 5K race is close!
If you are not a walker or runner but want to support us in the race, join us as a registered "volunteer!"

Cultural Leadership Loves You!
An estimated $18.6 billion dollars will be spent on this Valentine's Day. Ready to put some love into the world? Donate what you would have spent on a date to Cultural Leadership!
A $5 Valentine card could provide a Subway foot-long sandwich for a student on the Transformational Journey.
A $15 box of chocolates is equal to a student's entrance fee for the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama.
A $30 bouquet of roses could provide four "Speak Up!" booklets to students.

Alumni Spotlight - Julia Moskowitz
 | Julia Moskowitz, Class 5, in Bolivia.

"I spent my fall semester in Cochabamba, Bolivia through a study abroad program, SIT Bolivia: Multiculturalism, Globalization, and Social Change. In our last month, we completed an independent study project. I decided to do this in the form of a short documentary film (my first cinematography experience). I spent 3 weeks in a rural jungle village called San Pablo, interviewing women of various generations in the community about their lives, struggles, and hopes for the future. The purpose of this documentary was to give a voice to these women, whom are often unheard."

When our students see a problem, they grab an ally, or two or three,
roll up their sleeves, and get to work.
