Are Your Pets Protected from Heartworm? . . .
. . . If you read no further than this paragraph there are a three simple facts you should remember about Heartworm disease. - Heartworm is transmitted only by mosquitoes.
- Heartworm can be contracted year round, indoors or out, cats or dogs.
- The cost of preventing heartworm disease with a simple, effective medication is far less than the cost of treating heartworm disease which can be fatal.
During the month of April we're making it easier to protect your pets from heartworm disease by offering heartworm tests at a 50% discount. We also have several heartworm prevention products which come with manufacturer's discounts and rebates.
Here is a short (4min 23sec), informative video on heartworm disease from the American Veterinary Medical Association web site.

Heartworm disease prevention saves lives
|

Heartworm Basics . . .
GENERAL INFORMATION Heartworms are parasites that infect the hearts and lungs of dogs and cats. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquito bites. Heartworm disease can be prevented.
DOGS We recommend that all dogs be on some form of heartworm prevention: Heartgard®, Trifexis®, or Revolution® for cats. We recommend starting heartworm prevention between 8 and 14 weeks of age. This can be done at the initial Puppy Wellness exam.
We require heartworm testing annually for all dogs. The heartworm test also includes a Lyme test and an Ehrlichia test, both tick-born illnesses.
If a client has missed giving the heartworm prevention for more than 1 month, but not more than 5 months, we recommend re-starting the prevention and testing in 6 months. If the animal has been off heartworm prevention for more than 5 months, then a heartworm test is required before re-starting the prevention and must be followed by a re-test in 6 months.
CATS We recommend that all cats be on heartworm prevention.
We recommend starting heartworm prevention between 8 and 14 weeks of age. This can be done at the Kitten Wellness exam.
We recommend that cats be tested for heartworm, if they have not been on heartworm prevention. If a cat has been on heartworm prevention, re-testing is necessary only if the cat exhibits symptoms of heartworm disease. Symptoms may include coughing, lethargy, decreased appetite or weight loss.

Walk-in Clinic continues...
. . . We've begun holding a twice monthly Walk-in Clinic to provide basic health screening and vaccination services at a reduced cost to our clients. This is being offered on a first-come-first-served basis two Tuesday afternoons a month from 2:30 - 5:00 pm. It will include a wellness exam, vaccinations as deemed necessary by the veterinarian, a heartworm test and fecal/parasite screen.
The cost will be 50% off our regular fees for these services. Pets who have a history of vaccine reaction will not be eligible for the walk-in clinic nor will pets who are sick or injured. We will see emergencies during this time.
Upcoming clinics will be held on the following Tuesdays from 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm:
April 2, 16 and 30; May 7 and 21
Please call us at 996-1054 and talk to one of our receptionists if you have any questions about the walk-in clinic.

TGIFF . . .
. . . That's Thank God It's Fourth Friday! We be hosting an open house/mixer on Friday, April 26, at Arroyo. Doors will open from 6:30 - 8:00. We'll have beverages a nd hors d'oevres, some music (the easy listening kind) and you'll be able to take a tour of the hospital. We'll also be welcoming Sonoma Valley Dog Owers & Guardians (SVDOG) who will be on hand to give you a brief run down of their activities, including the push to allow dogs on the new Montini Preserve and highly successful Pup 'n Pour event that was held last Fall. Well behaved dogs and fearless cats on leash are welcome. There is no charge for attending but donations to SVDOG will be gratefully accepted.

Meet Dr. Wittenberg . . .
. . . We recently added Dr. Pam Wittenberg to our staff as a relief veterinarian. She will be seeing appointments on Wednesdays. Dr. Wittenberg is a 2000 graduate of the UC Davis Veterinary School and has been working at the Four Seasons Animal Hospital in Lafayette since that time. She will continue to work at both practices.
She enjoys her role as a primary care practitioner because it affords her the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of her patients' care during all stages of their lives. Dr. Stallings and our team have been very impressed with Dr. Wittenberg's work and we think you will enjoy meeting her should the opportunity arise.
