Roll Into a Rockin' Ocktober

CicLAvia Field
CicLAvia on Sunday - 9am to 4pm Downtown.

CICLAVIA: Eye Spy LA has been to most of the CicLAvia events because they are simply fantastic, friendly and fun for everyone.  This event is back in the heart of downtown.  The course is 7.5 miles in a hub and spoke layout with Grand Park the central hub.  Roll or stroll to Chinatown, Mariachi Plaza, Macarthur Park, and the African American Firefighter Museum hubs. The Grand Park hub is a pedestrian only zone and there will be plenty of activities, entertainment, and food trucks at each of the hubs.  The CICLAVIA website is loaded with information about attending. This isn't just a "bicycle" event and it certainly is not a race. Go slow, stop at the hubs and enjoy all of the sights and sounds.

OCTOBER OVERLOAD: This month is always rockin' with Halloween attractions, Harvest festivals and Ocktoberfest celebrations. Get your Oct-tung baby started with a bang!

Art About War

THE SOLDIERS PROJECT: A one-night only free event features rising artists who have served our country in a provocative exhibition at the Four Points Sheraton at LAX. ART ABOUT WAR kicks off the Pathways Home Conference which brings healthcare personnel together to discuss the mental toll our veterans and their families face when they return home from duty. Partnering with the United States Veterans' Artists Alliance (USVAA), this special showing includes photographer Philip Schladweiler's image of the shrapnel that left him blinded in one eye as well as seven mixed media artists. There will be live music and hors d'oeuvres. Tonight from 7pm - 9pm.

'Breath and Imagination' Soars at the Colony in Burbank by M.R. Hunter

Breath and Imagination

The season opener at the Colony about the first African-American concert artist, Roland Hayes, epitomizes the pursuit of passion despite struggle and necessary determination when all that sustains it is little more than breath and imagination. Given the Colony's recent financial woes, this west coast premiere is a fitting choice, even if a slight departure from their typical trope.

Roland Hayes' story by Daniel Beaty concerns itself with one taking control of their destiny. A noble but somewhat predictable narrative is artfully handled by Saundra McClain as the play picks up steam so too does Roland's tenor abilities until the rise in both the plot and the vocal qualities are evenly matched up to an exciting and memorable crescendo. The audience earns the privilege to hear and witness the underdog triumph even through the intermittent flashbacks when the then famous singer discovers his wife and daughter have been arrested for shoe shopping in Georgia. The stark contrast to Roland Hayes' stardom and racial bias is powerful...

Most signs are socially active now by meeting new people and possible romantic interests. Spend time with those who are positive and upbeat as there is high degree of susceptibility that could impact our moods if we're not careful of the kind of company we keep. There is much potential in fortunate chance encounters, so be aware of who you meet and keep your business cards handy at all times. This is an excellent period of self-initiation and confidence for all signs. Avoid burning bridges or coming on too strong however as this could be irreparable much later...
