Tasty Art, Music & Film This Weekend

THIS WEEKEND - just a few of the interesting things going this weekend. There are many more of course:

PARTY UNDER THE STARS: food trucks, free drinks, art and music await you at Artbeat 2013 at La Plaza and benefits programs at Children's Hospital.  It's time to party again with KCRW at this month's Summer Night in Chinatown.

Still scratching your head? There are more Editor's Picks this week

Discounts DISCOUNTS - there are some really good ones right now. Plan ahead for a funny cruise in the coastal waters of Southern California, or get on a boat and go whale watching. From the jazzy comedy of Wet the Hippo to magical Smoke & Mirrors entertain yourself at a discount.  All at very reasonable prices. Even better most of the discounts offered are direct from the event/activity producers and do not involve additional fees to receive the discount.

TIP: you can find events and other things to do near you - you'll find neighborhood and regional calendar links at the bottom of all Eye Spy LA web pages.

Have a Happy Weekend!

'The Island' Should Remain an Island Unto Itself by M.R. Hunter

The Island Review

O, I have suffered
With those that I saw suffer!

- Miranda from "The Tempest"

"Mom, what the fuck was that?"
- Miranda from "The Island"

Shakespeare said it best because he's the big, bad boy Bard. Nuff said. 400 years later and apparently the magical charms of "The Tempest" requires a juvenile re-imagining set to music.

Clearly, this romantic, neoclassical tale needs help or the SkyPilot Theatre believes it does. Book and music by Jonathan Price takes the fantastic world of an island and drags it through the gutter with the lowest common denominator of our modern sensibilities: F-bombs, pelvic-thrusting and mind-numbing idiocy.

In keeping with this ill-conceived adaptation, I have absconded with tearing down this blight specifically and will step aside and give William Shakespeare from "The Tempest" his due.

Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows

- Trinculo from "The Tempest" Act II, scene II

Had any of my betters recommended at intermission we skip out and get a motel room, I would've jumped at the chance. Sadly, I was surrounded by gentlemen. What's a girl to do?

The next few weeks will be open windows of opportunity and personal growth for most signs. This is a good time to pursue our ambitions without fear of pushback. We need to be mindful of how we treat others as the sun in Leo can bring out our egos in unflattering displays of arrogance and obliviousness. Jupiter could encourage us to spend too freely and impulsively. Take advantage of free or low-cost events rather than blow a paycheck in a single outing. Fire and Earth sings will be feeling sexually adventurous while Water and Air will be self-reflective.

Peter Mac Fills Judy Garland's Ruby Slippers by M.R. Hunter

  Peter Mac Judy

It takes an hour for Peter Mac to become the physical incarnation of Judy Garland. It only takes five minutes into his performance to appreciate how close we are to the genuine article. This isn't just a tribute-it is a summoning. Judy lives for those who still believe in the magic of Oz.

Accuracy is tantamount to Peter's tribute artistry. His passion for his subject matter fuels his desire to know more through extensive homework and practice. Nothing is glossed over. His "Get Happy" show is probably bar none one of the best in terms of the details, the biography and the revelations leveled with care throughout. Think you know all there is to know about Judy? Think again. If it is possible to hold a PhD in Judy Garland, Peter Mac should receive an honorary degree...

Some of the best things in summer are free. Look around you're own neighborhood. You'll find free concerts, film screenings and theatre in parks, shopping centers, museums, and other nooks and crannies that have a patch of grass or some asphalt to setup a stage and some seating in...
