Lift Your Spirits with Booze and Bikes

Jazz MOCA

Not a good idea to drink and bike so split the difference with an action-packed weekend:

 CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF CICLAVIA

Ciclavia PoochWe're big fans of the bikes and that's why CicLAvia is one of our favorite events. The community spirit is what makes this such a unique experience...that and riding down major thoroughfares without dodging cars.

But this is NOT a race and not just for bikes.

This Sunday's event takes place on 6 miles of Wishire Boulevard. Arrive early and get in a few laps if you want a faster ride. Later the throngs pack the streets and temps warm up. Take sunscreen and water.

You don't need a bike to enjoy this event. It's a terrific outing just to bring a couple of chairs, a cooler and watch everyone else stroll and roll by. People are very happy so there is a real sense of goodwill and camaraderie that is hard to find anywhere else. You never know who or what you might see. There are food trucks, vendors and assorted entertainment located at the hubs. If you haven't yet been (REALLY?), then this weekend is the perfect opportunity to discover what hundreds of thousands of folks are ringing their bells over. Oh, and yes, this is FREE! So why haven't we seen you there?

NICHE NICE: For those who'd prefer to avoid a crowd, there are always events that are low on head counts and high on fun.

  • Entertainment covers a lot of ground to keep you and your friends occupied.
  • Arts & Culture is a smart choice for those who have refined taste.
  • Films are the classic cinematic cool solution.
  • Free Events when you're low on cash?
  • Kids Stuff is the best place to find summertime youth-oriented activities.

EYE KNOW L.A. by Andrea Kirk
How much do you know about L.A.?

I took this photo in 2003. If you went to the first of the Chinatown Summer Nights events (very cool and free) last Saturday at Chinatown Plaza, you might have noticed that this sign is no longer there in front of the Hop Louie restaurant (the pagoda in the background).  The reason is that CHINATOWNLAND was an art installation created by Andre Yi in 2002.  It was only supposed to last a couple of months, but stayed up for years...

For more than 10 years now I've been photographing our city and writing about what's going on around town. As you might imagine the Eye Spy photo file is quite large.

I thought it would be fun to share some of the old stuff from the past 10 years with you.

HAVE SOME FUN: Share this with your friends to see if they know.

Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum's Charming "Taming of the Shrew"

by Mark Share

  Taming of the Shrew

For its opening production of summer 2013, Theatricum Botanicum revives Shakespeare's comic "Taming of the Shrew" with Ellen Geer directing to highlight the humor and Willow Geer game for the indignities in the role of Katherina (or Kate) the shrew. It feels like this anti-feminist play has seen few productions over the past decade or so, but recently there have been a spate of revivals, with comedy overcoming the misgivings of conscience...

Creative Cognitive Dissonance: "We Are Proud to Present" by M.R. Hunter

We Are Proud

In Jackie Sibblies Drury's west coast premiere at The Matrix Theatre, a troupe of six ragtag performers set out to create an informal discourse on the subject of a century past genocide. The 25-worded title of Drury's play details the intent, the subject matter, and the difficult task of attempting to dramatize an obscure but volatile period of history: "We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Nambia, Formerly Known as Southwest Africa, From the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915." Like the title, Drury's play is a strange but intoxicating amalgamation of biting humor, ridiculous aspirations, history and novelty...

Travel is recommended for most signs. Expect snafus and delays due to Mercury's Retrograde. Keep a cool head for the next three weeks as the temperature rises and emotions get heated. Channel your energy into low risk physical activities for now. Personal and professional matters may require further finesse as well. Avoid initiating any new projects until August. This is a good time to journal, think-tank or spitball new ideas. Pay attention to dreams and your intuition too. This retrograde will not be imperceptibly felt, so utilize the arising problems as lesson tune-ups.

Al Fresco LA - Summer Outdoor Entertainment 2013 by Andrea Kirk

Levitt Pavillion

Summer in L.A. is all about the experience and not so much about the money. Grab your friends and a cooler, a blanket, and a picnic. You'll find plenty of summer events and low cost al fresco entertainment all over town.

Some of the best things in summer are free. Look around you're own neighborhood. You'll find free concerts, film screenings and theatre in parks, shopping centers, museums, and other nooks and crannies that have a patch of grass or some asphalt to setup a stage and some seating in. Downtown L.A...
