A Full & Fun Weekend: Earth Day, Sock Hop & Cirque Shine
|
BE ENTERTAINED: This weekend is loaded up with razzlin' and dazzlin shows you can find on our Entertainment page. Sure this is a Film town but Theater can hold its own here too as you can see below by all our Eyes Up recommended reviews.
FESTIVE FABULOUSNESS: Festivals are always a good way to get out and about. This week is all about Earth Day but there's also a throwback to the 50s which is neat-o.
GO WILD: Let's face it, if it weren't for our four-legged friends requiring their daily constitutional, some of us would never leave our man or girl caves. So show some love on our Pets page or adopt a new pal that will have you getting some needed Vitamin D.
LAUGH LOUD: We got the top comedian lineups from Burbank to Hollywood and beyond on our Comedy page. This is a great way to have a laugh with friends and drinks.
LOOKING FORWARD TO...
GEAR UP: Next weekend is brewing with another exciting CicLAvia event on Sunday April 21st turns 15 miles of L.A. streets (from Downtown to Venice) into a giant park and block party. Really you'll never see as many smiley friendly faces as at this event.
BEER & ART: Also next week is the best combo in town at the Spring Brewery Art Walk. We've covered this event before and plan to make another return. How can we resist?

Betty Hutton: Hot Dog! by M.R. Hunter
|
Bob Hope described the bubbly blonde actress as a "vitamin pill with legs." A favorite among GIs during WWII, Hope quipped "if they put a propeller on Betty Hutton and sent her over to Germany, the war'd be over by Christmas."
Diane Vincent, a professional Lucy Ricardo impersonator, treats her subject like an adoring fan. The love and affection for Hutton is unquestioningly evident, especially Vincent's foreword in the program which carefully sidesteps exactly what this show is, "a musical tribute to the songs of Betty Hutton" (underlined for emphasis). Fair enough but the attempt produces only fair results. Vincent does not attempt to recreate the persona of Hutton in any largely recognizable way...

Vicious Dogs in NoHo: Sweet, Salty & Full of Flavor by M.R. Hunter
|
In need of some good meat on a bun? The answer is Vicious Dogs. Don't let the name scare you as this is one of the friendliest eateries located in the heart of the NoHo Arts District. If you're in the area to see a live stage show on Theater Row or catching a flick at the Laemmle 7 (located directly across from Vicious Dogs), this is the best casual dining for a quick but satisfying bite.
These charbroiled dogs are sizzlin' with variety, fantastic combinations and bursting with flavor. We recommend the surefire Sweet & Salty (pictured above), a Polish kielbasa glazed with sweet chili and loaded up with grilled onions and peppers...

"Wolves": A Very Bloody Fairy Tale by M.R. Hunter
|
Steve Yockey's world premiere at the Celebration Theatre mightily attempts to incorporate the romanticism of a love story between two men and a wolf that brings retribution in blood and fear. It is a mildly interesting concept but for all its intrusive narrating throughout and convenient exposition that does little to illuminate the whiny, neediness of a lonely man in a big city attached to faithless couch-hopper, the deeper connotations are completely absent which is imperative for these storybook stock characters to connect beyond the superficial setup...

This is a month for self-actualization. Realize your potential and aim high towards your goals. Get real about what you want instead of settling for what you've already got. Stop being lazy! Avoid undue complacency. Reaching for what you want may be straining, scary and uncomfortable but good stuff don't always come so easily so buck it up. Most signs will be super-charged, making tackling projects a cinch so long as we don't procrastinate or wait for inspiration to strike. Trust the method to the madness. Swim with the current, not against now.
