Spring Forward & Spring Out
|
SPRING FORWARD: It's that time again when we lose an hour of shut eye but gain another hour of sun. We think Daylight Savings this Sat is a pretty fair trade-off when there's so much to do this weekend and after a brief rain, the skies couldn't be any bluer or clear.
FRIDAY NITES:
SATURDAY SIZZLIN' SHOWS:
SUNDAY OUTINGS:
AFTER DARK: Duck inside for some alternatives to warming up at the local cineplex. You won't find the usual suspects on our Film page. Prefer a play? Play around on our Theater page. Laugh your head off on our Comedy page. As usual check our full Entertainment Calendar for other interesting and unusual options.

Anti-Norton This! "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs"
by M.R. Hunter
|
I've been infected with a virus. For what I have there is no cure. It is highly contagious. This virus spreads as quickly and invisibly as malware. As I'm writing this on a laptop, the virus runs in the background. It has altered my perception, however slightly, as viruses are known to do.
The virus I refer to is Alex Lyras in Mike Daisey's controversial "The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs" at Theatre Asylum. A byte sized piece of prop-theater, Daisey's monologue attracted critical attention both for its questionable verity and for its fearless reproach of one of technology's greatest Goliaths', the late Steve Jobs...

Blurred Lines but Sharp Acting in "Sexsting" by M.R. Hunter
|
For those who avidly watched Dateline's voyeuristic and creep-ridden To Catch a Predator,"Sexsting" by Doris Baizley and Susan Raffanti offer a variant on this theme where the bad guy isn't so easily pigeon-holed and the good guy isn't so easily innocent. It makes for uneasy theater, deeply fascinating, tinged with blurred lines of entrapment, ethics and friendship.
It's a strange but intriguing ride through the thrill of a chase and the flipped side to a possible predator turned into prey...

Shields Date Garden, Indio, CA, 1952 by Charles Phoenix
|
How much are we all loving that giant knight-in-shining armor pointing to the door of the "new" salesroom, the utilitarian-yet-modern billboard-of-a-building and beautiful grove of date-bearing palms peeking over the roof. In the realm of classic American roadside attractions, Shields Date Garden is one of the greatest.
Over the years, I've scarfed down their delicious and nutritious dates, slurped their super sweet date shakes and, of course, watched "The Romance and Sex Life of a Date" in the Romance Theater. Next year, Shields will celebrate its 90th anniversary. Miraculously, the place looks virtually the same today as it did 60 years ago when this very special slide was taken.
This slide is special not just because it's a great image. It's extra special because it survived being run over by a car, actually several cars. Yep. Here's what happened...

This is a busy month for most signs. There will be a lot of action but we should make sure that it is productive and not wasted on spinning our wheels. Mercury will be in retrograde, making silence golden for those who find themselves easily tongue-tied. Between the spurts of energy, we should find peaceful respites both at home and in nature. Getting out and about should help us quiet our minds and listen to our hearts. Anything that is unresolved may linger, but it would be best to delve into why instead of rushing in to fix it. Many of us will be soul-searching.
