More to Love - Chinese New Year & Prez Day

Valentine's Day was yesterday, however love themed events and entertainment continue all weekend.  But that isn't all there is to love about this weekend...

ChinatownSummerNight

MORE TO LOVE: We love the Chinese New Year Festival a colorful and fun event every year.  This year celebrates the Year of the Snake.  The parade will be on Saturday and the festival runs both Saturday and Sunday.  Easy access to Chinatown via the Metro Gold line. Lovely bonus this weekend: President's Day giving us the Monday off. Whew!

WALK OUT: Being about the brightest spot in the country weather-wise, this is the perfect weekend to walk off some of those chocolate kisses Cupid left for us.

TECH, LIT & TRIVIAL PURSUITS:

CHICK FRIENDLY:

3-DAY WEEKEND WARRIOR: Hit the road! Take off on our Weekend Getaway page with some of our on and off the beaten trail recommendations.

Happy Chinese New Year! Happy President's Day!! Happy Three-Day Weekend!!!

No Goy: "When You're in Love, the Whole World is Jewish"

by M.R. Hunter

WYIL Theater Review Apparently, all a show needs to sell out and earn early extensions is name recognition, as in the case of director, Jason Alexander, and dated material targeted for a specific audience. Voila! Producers Danny Gold and Billy Riback should be commended on their sure-fire brand of successful packaging with "When You're in Love, the Whole World is Jewish" that is pure bupkes.

Based on the 1965 Grammy nominated comedy album written and produced by Bob Booker and George Foster, this certain brand of humor had its day, probably in the Catskills, but the sun has set since then and this cast (beset by a pair of tin-foil menorahs) do nothing to make it current. The effect is like sitting for 90mins while watching someone flog a pony as it brays for relief. 90mins? It felt more like 3 hours as the vignettes are dished out in an all-you-can-eat buffet line of one-liners, wise cracks and creaky setups for a punchline that is as crusty as week old challah bread. One could possibly imagine this series of bad acts on a cruise line but I wouldn't subject the poor people of the crippled Carnival Triumph to more hardship and undue grief...

Mulholland Scenic Parkway by Andrea Kirk

Mulholland Scenic View

A scenic drive along Mulholland Drive is one of the things I recommend to do on Valentine's Day especially if Cupid shoots Mother Nature with a love arrow and it turns out to be a beautiful day. This is always a romantic and scenic drive on a clear day.

We started at the Stone Canyon Overlook east of the 405 and continued to the eastern most Hollywood Bowl Overlook just west of the 101. The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy maintains the overlooks along the Mulholland Scenic Parkway. Some of the overlooks are pullouts where you can get out of the car and have a look, others have trailheads and larger parking areas...

Gargantuan Googie Gewgaw, Lakeland Florida, 2013 by Charles Phoenix

Googie Gewgaw

Recently while curiously searching Google for "Googie" images, I scrolled across a picture of the Southgate Shopping Centers sign. I was more than spellbound by the Googie gloriousness and oh-so surprised because I was totally unaware of it.

With the click of a few keys, I was shocked to discover that this super-sized, space-age spectacle STILL STANDS as the centerpiece, logo and crowning touch of the shopping center it stands for just as it has since 1957...

Start 2013 with a fresh perspective! This is an excellent time to shed old attitudes and habits. Pay close attention to relationships this month and determine whether or not they add or detract to your well-being. Toxic entanglements and emotional vampires should get the boot for good. Reflect on what you learned last year and adapt those experiences in order to avoid making the same mistakes. This is the month when we tend to fall off the resolution wagon, so make a conscious effort to stay the course. Do what you intend to do without excuses or justifications.
