Charles Phoenix Bday

EYE SPY LA TURNS 10 IN 2013! We are planning big things this year. In the meantime, looking back... I met Charles Phoenix early on, I saw one of his retro slide shows at the Egyptian in Hollywood and was blown away. Shortly after that he became a regular editorial contributor to Eye Spy LA sharing his retro slide of the week for all of these years. I have always thought of him as Mr. LA. As usual he'll have plenty of shows and tours coming up locally starting in February. In the meantime click on the photo or link above to get acquainted with him.

See all of this week's Editors Picks or view the full Eye Spy LA Calendar

TIP: you can find events and other things to do near you - you'll find neighborhood and regional calendar links at the bottom of all Eye Spy LA web pages.

Have a wonderful 3-Day weekend and Happy MLK Day!

Cathy Rigby as "Peter Pan" Flies Back to the Pantages by M.R. Hunter

Cathy Rigby Peter Pan

Former gymnast, Cathy Rigby's 40-year career playing a boy, who refuses to grow up, flies back to the Pantages, amid all its glitter and glib nuances. Holding the astounding record for the longest-portrayal of the title role, what this production lacks in ingenuity is made up for in Rigby's significant incarnation.

She is Peter Pan...proving at 60 that she's still got it. One wonders if some of Peter Pan's boyish immortality has rubbed off on this mother of four, grandmother, and wife whenever she vaults, does a handstand on a banister and flips and twirls in midair with the widest grin of pure joy. At half her age, I moan and groan just unpeeling myself from my desk-so when I watch a woman a smidge younger than my mother do a back handspring I suddenly feel a bit too grown up...old...

Nerd Heaven - Report from CES 2013 by Mark Share

CES 2013 Nikon

The annual consumer electronics show (CES) attracts more than 150,000 attendees, and is Las Vegas's biggest trade show, in a city with about the same number of hotel rooms for which the prices are raised as much as ten times the rates available on other January days. The attendees are almost entirely male, from all over the world, and judging from the sold out Southwest flights, a lot are from LA.

For photography, you can try out cameras in areas of the big electronics: Sony, Panasonic (Lumix), Samsung, but Canon and Nikon have the best experience. They both have 800 mm lenses available to try out on their best camera bodies so you can try to pick out a person across the convention center. I was hoping they'd hire someone to wear a Where's Waldo hat to make it a game. Nikon provided a great interactive experience, by setting up three tableaux to shoot with their latest cameras: a mad scientist in a colorful lab, a pair of professional dancers for action, and a flower garden for close-ups...

Gee Whiz! Riding the Aerial Tram in Palm Springs by Andrea Kirk

Aerial Tram Palm Springs One of the things I've always wanted to do is ride the tram from Palm Springs to the snow covered peaks above. Finally I took a trip with a friend and we had nothing in particular scheduled except fun and relaxation. On the way into town we saw the sign and off we went.

We were so excited. We bought the tickets, got on board, waited for take off admiring all the granite and the views at the bottom. The tram starts going up, we are on our way. We both looked at each other: OMG we forgot we are AFRAID of heights. What were we thinking! What are we doing! We ran to the door... too late. We didn't just leave our fingerprints on the steel handrail, we left impressions...

Barring something like the end of the world, 2013 is a year that comes with important lessons. Those who have been struggling to find their niche will have better opportunities to find their true calling. Our attentions have been focused on recent tragedies, but from these will come a collective call to action. This universal consciousness can motivate positive change. All signs should be willing to adapt and shift, especially if it means breaking new ground or letting go of a bad habit. Start the New Year with a fresh perspective. Take resolutions to a higher level now.
