RECOMMENDED This Weekend
|
HONOR OUR HEROES: This Sunday is Veteran's Day and a time to pay tribute to our servicemen and women who risk their lives for our freedom. With so much attention directed at our recent election, it's easy to ignore those who serve our country to keep democracy safe. Give a Veteran thanks by taking them to lunch or find other ways to show your appreciation. Raise a flag or attend a special event this weekend and/or on Monday. Never forget, always remember.
NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH: Do you think you have what it takes to be the next Hemingway, Vonnegut, Woolf, King, Rowling or Stephanie Meyer? Whatever your brand of literary or genre genius, this is the month to put those dreams into reality. If you haven't started your magnum opus yet, don't worry there's still time...and we think these events will inspire the writer in you.
INDOOR THRILLS: Fall is definitely here what with the rain and brisk bite to the air. For those who prefer to cozy up somewhere warm, we've got some hot events to keep you toasty.
Find cool and seasonal things to do on our November Calendar.
Don't let the holidays sneak up on you. Get the jump with our happy and hefty Holiday Guide.
Cultural & Food Festivals are as abundant as fall harvests - fun, food, dancing and entertainment. Find out what festivals are coming up on our Festival calendar.
Anyone up for a good flick? We got more than just blockbuster hits on our Film page.

Black Women: State of the Union - Taking Flight at Katselas
by M.R. Hunter
|
The 2009 NAACP award-winning theatrical event returns with a new collection of six one-acts by women of color exploring gender, race and stereotype through humor, heart and brutal honesty.
This is a show that shatters preconceived notions from the outset and expertly ties each scene with genuine and personal appeals by members of the cast. It is not a show just for women. It is not a show for the racial minority. It is a show about the human experience told by women, performed primarily by women and deserves our attention.

National Novel Writing Month: Have You Started Yet? by Mark Share
|
November 1 marks the start of the annual National Novel Writing Month. Tens of thousands of writers will sign up at www.nanowrimo.org for free and log in their progress toward 50,000 words, which is the length ofThe Great Gatsby, and considerably more words than required to create briefer masterpieces like Of Mice and Men, Heart of Darkness, or Goodbye, Columbus.
But at least 50,000 words is the goal in this marathon to create an unfiltered and unfinished first draft of your novel. That's about 1,700 words or seven pages a day for 30 days if you're the type who diligently writes the same amount each day for 30 days. But most people, according to anecdote, will take days off and make a big push at the end of the month. So if you're reading this today, you're in plenty of time to grab the Macbook and an espresso.

Hypnotic Holiday Inn Signs, Somewhere, USA, 1962 by Charles Phoenix
|
Behold the glory of the iconic Holiday Inn sign. So gigantic it simply miniaturizes the trio of tourists posing beside it. The optimistic "hand-written" font blazing the name across the sky is nearly hypnotic. The colors are clownish and cartoonish. And if you forget where you are, not a problem, this sign tells you. How convenient! If that doesn't charm you, perhaps FREE TV and SWIMMING POOL will.
Today Holiday Inn is a worldwide operation but, surprisingly, not one of these original still stands.

Before Reality TV There Were Shows Like These: "You Can't Take It With You" by MR Hunter
|

It's difficult for classics to compete with the deluge of crap bombarding us on every flat screen. Isn't it nice when something doesn't rely on f-bombs, histrionic meltdowns, catfights and shameless exploitation to still be funny, relevant, touching and voyeuristically satisfying? That's what "You Can't Take It With You" at Antaeus provides which is more than I can say for my TV Guide. Tune into this show and give the sleazy, self-obsessed anti-heroes a rest for one night...

With the changing seasons and Thanksgiving on the horizon, most signs can also expect a significant change in their own lives. This obvious shift will be felt throughout November. We should take care of what we say and make sure our words match up with our actions. Election Day is upon us, but instead of promoting rhetoric, it would be better to study and examine the issues without making a big issue just to prove a point. Patience is highly recommended for most signs as many of us are operating with a short fuse. We should remain calm and collected.

Tap to go Metro - No More Paper Tickets by Andrea Kirk
|
No more paper tickets on Metro. Here is what you need to avoid frustration with your first TAP transaction.
I was a bit late to the party on this one. The MTA began locking the turnstiles and requiring TAP cards during August and September. No more paper tickets. The ticketing has changed but it's actually quite easy to use. You will need to buy a $1.00 TAP card as a part of your transaction (if you have not already done so).
