Greetings!
April is Autism Awareness Month, a great time to highlight how the right supports can help individuals with autism spectrum disorders live and thrive in our community. In this spring season of new possibilities, we are proud of our new online store featuring great merchandise with designs by Arc Artists. Shop The Arc and support our artists! Thank you Cafe Press for making this possible. Graduation is on the horizon for the first wave of young transition students who are a part of Access SFUSD-The Arc, and our new Wellness Wednesdays program is keeping everyone healthy so they can pursue their school, work and artistic dreams. Thank you for supporting the opportunities that create a rich quality of life for the clients with autism and other developmental disabilities we serve, this spring and all year long. Sincerely, Meredith Meredith Manning Communications Director SUPPORT OUR MISSION AND DONATE TODAY! |
| WorkLife Awards Celebrate "Everyday People" |
|
Our recent 2013 WorkLife Awards celebrated a terrific group of hard-working clients with all the fanfare appropriate to these employees with developmental disabilities and the employers that champion their success. Awardees list here.
Over 300 friends, family and supporters attended the annual event held at the beautiful Hotel Whitcomb in downtown San Francisco. See photos: Facebook The Arc San Francisco online week of 4/8.
Let's tip our hats to these wonderful awardees and everyone who supported this exciting evening of music, dance and recognition: our Board, Business Advisory Council, staff and volunteers including PULSE of The Arc and especially our sponsors who made this extraordinary event possible.

| Officials Laud Access SFUSD/The Arc Transition Student Program |
 | | SFUSD Board President Rachel Norton, The Arc CEO Dr. Glenn Motola, students and SFUSD Superintendent Richard Carranza cut the ribbon at Access SFUSD/The Arc. |
|
Students, teachers, parents, and public officials were all on hand recently at the Open House and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Access SFUSD/The Arc, a program for transition students ages 18-22 years housed right next door to The Arc's main Howard Street location.
The innovative program teaches students with developmental disabilities functional and academic skills in a dynamic community-based setting.
Rachel Norman, SFUSD (San Francisco Unified School District) Board President, deemed the new site "the best possible transition environment we could imagine for our students. This partnership with The Arc has great potential for replication." Dr. Glenn Motola, The Arc San Francisco CEO, commented, "This is a unique model that will foster greater independence for these young adults and we're proud to be part of creating more opportunties for San Francisco's students with disabilities."

UCSF Dental Students Screen Clients at Wellness Wednesdays
|
 | | Over 30 clients received free dental screenings from students at UCSF. |
|
Our Wellness Wednesdays health assessments were a huge success recently thanks to the UCSF dental students who screened over 30 clients for healthier smiles and offered helpful referrals.
Center for Health and Wellness Co-Director Wendy Ginther observed that over half of those screened were in danger of more serious health problems and given referrals for affordable follow-up. Said Ginther, "Our population is at risk for a number of oral health problems. A lifetime of minimal care, medication side effects and communication barriers can mean serious--even life-threatening--problems down the road." Co-Director Jennifer Dresen commented, "We're grateful for the support of the UCSF students. They provided assessments and helpful dental care demonstrations that will really benefit our clients." Sarah Kent, one of the student volunteers, said, "It was a wonderful experience for us. We'll be back!"
NOTE: Our official Wellness Wednesdays Launch is on April 17, 2013. Join us at 11am as we highlight the ground-breaking CDC*/Arc-HealthMeet study that will help ensure people with developmental disabilities have access to the care they need through The Arc and other local and national sites.
