Rivers Alive Cleanup Oct. 17

On Saturday, Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Milton's annual "Rivers Alive" waterways cleanup, education and protection program will be held at locations across the city.

The Milton Grows Green Committee (MGG) is co-sponsoring the event with Bailey Farm & Gardens, Inc., which has been involved with the project for 18 years. Rivers Alive 2015 will kick off from its traditional location at Bailey Farm & Gardens, 255 Hickory Flat Road, one mile west of the Birmingham Crossroads. Click here for directions.

Volunteers will gather at 9 a.m., then clean up identified streams, roadways and school sites to help keep our city and waterways pure and beautiful. Everyone, regardless of age, is welcome.

Depending on age and capabilities, volunteers will be assigned to predetermined local waterways to remove debris deposited from upstream and left by passers-by. Waders and boots will be a plus for those who want to get in the river.

Milton Adopt-a-Road groups are encouraged to have a clean-up during the event and stop by for refreshments and recognition.

The Rivers Alive Cleanup is a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn more about our Coosa River watershed and help improve the quality of our drinking water. The mission of Rivers Alive is to create awareness and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's 70,150 miles of water resources through local waterway cleanup events that include streams, rivers, lakes, beaches and wetlands. It is an outreach program of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Its fire safety week!
Every year, fire departments across the country participate in Fire Safety Week in early October.  The Milton Fire-Rescue Department believes that the best way to fight a fire is to prevent it from ever happening.  Fire safety can be accomplished through making our buildings and homes safer and through teaching life safety skills at an early age and then partnering with adults and families to encourage and enhance safety throughout our community

This October, Milton firefighters will be teaching life safety skills in elementary school classrooms, daycares and community events across the city, beginning with a program "kick-off" including the Fire Clowns and fire extinguisher demonstrations Oct. 3 at Home Depot on Windward Parkway from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at Crabapple Fest from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  A week of community outreach will follow with lectures, classroom demonstrations, fire clowns and our fire safety house.

And of course, Milton Fire-Rescue Department's public educators are available year round for community safety programs.  Please visit our website or call us at 678-242-2541 for more information.

Halloween Safety Tips from Milton Police Department
October is the perfect month to discuss some safety tips for parents and children, with Halloween right around the corner!  Did you know that, on average, children are more than twice as likely to be struck and killed by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year? The following tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will make you and your children's Halloween worry-free.

S          Swords, knives, and other costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.
A         Avoid trick-or-treating alone and walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
F          Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
E          Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them.

H         Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and help others see you.
A         Always test makeup in a small area first to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.
L          Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.
L          Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
O         Only walk on sidewalks, whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic.
W         Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
E          Eat only factory-wrapped treats.
E          Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult who gives the ok and only visit well-lit houses.
N         Never walk near lit candles or luminaries - make sure costumes are flame-resistant.
