Getting ready for fall
Much as they are in your own household, things are busy around Milton City Hall this time of year.
Next week we will see the 14th anniversary of September 11. Most of you can remember exactly where you were and how you felt on that day when you heard the news. We are a resilient country, but the passage of time does not diminish the tragedy that our nation suffered. We hope you will join us next week with Cambridge and Milton high schools to reflect, remember and honor those who lost their lives. As you look through this newsletter, you'll see the numerous other things we've got going on throughout Milton...

9/11: Patriot Day
A note from Deputy Fire Chief Mark Stephens:
This year marks the 14th anniversary of 9/11. The terror attacks that unfolded on September 11, 2001 are forever etched in our memories as are the 2996 lives cut short that fateful day. Among those lost were the faithful first responders who were dispatched to render aid at the World Trade Center. When the twin towers fell, and the dust cleared, we found out that 343 Firefighters and 60 Police Officers had been killed. The Milton Fire-Rescue and Milton Police Department's extend our thoughts and best wishes to our extended family of the NYFD and NYPD as they deal with the anniversary of this painful event. Patriot Day is a National Day of Service and Remembrance occurring on September 11th each year. It is our duty to "Never Forget".

Join our community in remembering this 9/11
City of Milton police, fire, staff and elected officials invite you to support two student-led Sept. 11 ceremonies at Cambridge and Milton high schools remembering the victims of the heinous attacks on the United States.
MILTON HIGH
Milton High student Savannah Bailey is organizing the eighth year of Milton's Sept. 11 display. Beginning at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, Bailey and volunteers will place 2,996 flags on the front lawn of the school - one for each life lost during the attacks. Click here for directions.
If you are interested in volunteering to help place flags at the school, contact Bailey at (678) 237-3303 or by e-mail at savvy84@gmail.com.
The next morning at 8 a.m., there will be a short memorial service to commemorate the lives lost in the attacks.
All aspects of the event are open to the public, said Bailey, and residents are invited to reflect on the display throughout the day.
"This is a meaningful way to engage students, teachers and the community as we reflect, remember and honor those who lost their lives on that tragic day of Sept. 11, 2001," said Bailey. "By remembering and honoring lives lost of both victims and first responders, we strengthen what binds us together as a community and as a nation."
CAMBRIDGE HIGH
Led by freshman Elizabeth Willis, Cambridge High School students and community members will organize the school's 9/11: Never Forget Memorial.
"The flags we set out are not just symbols of our national pride. Each flag represents someone's son, daughter, husband, wife, friend, or child. They deserve to be remembered." said Willis.
Willis and her group will also place 2,996 American flags on the front lawn of Cambridge High School. The community is invited to visit the memorial throughout the day to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and to the men and women who have been fighting for our country, oversees and within the nation, ever since. A memorial book will be on site for those who wish to pen their thoughts.
Those interested in volunteering to set up the display may come to Cambridge High School at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. Click here for directions.

MFRF relies solely upon the financial support of civic minded local businesses, organizations and citizens in order to meet their objectives. The tournament was sponsored in-cash and in-kind by over 70 donors who were recognized on signage, printed materials as well as social media. Fulton County Schools Ask for Input
In order to build the schools of tomorrow, Fulton County Schools needs you today.
That's the motto of a special committee charged with reviewing the standards used to design new schools and renovate older ones. Known commonly in the industry as "ed specs," educational specifications are the building design characteristics that support educational programs and provide equitable facilities standards for school construction.
Over the past several months, Fulton County Schools staff have been engaging targeted groups to share information about the process and collect feedback that will be used in developing a 2017-2022 capital plan. In mid-September, several community meetings located throughout the county have been set to gather further input.
- Monday, September 14, 6:45 p.m. - Sandtown Middle School
- Monday, September 14, 7:00 p.m. - Milton High School
- Tuesday, September 15, 7:00 p.m. - Chattahoochee High School
- Tuesday, September 15, 6:30 p.m. - Paul D. West Middle School
- Wednesday, September 16, 7:00 p.m. - Roswell High School
- Wednesday, September 16, 6:30 p.m. - Dunwoody Springs Elementary School
Design consultants from DeJong-Richter, a nationally recognized educational facility planning firm, will lead a discussion about how schoolbuildings can support a personalized learning environment for the 21st Century.
Parents, teachers, students, business owners and community members are encouraged to participate.

Burn Ban through Sept. 30
Milton Fire Marshal Matthew Marietta would like to remind the community that the state's "burn ban" is in effect through Sept. 30.
The ban, which is enacted because of dry conditions and environmental health regulations, is issued by the state Environmental Protection Division and covers Milton, the rest of Fulton County and a number of other surrounding counties.
The following types of open burning are banned:
- Burning of leaves, tree limbs or other yard wastes
- Burning of vegetative waste from land clearing
- Burning over of forest land by the owners of the land
Please note: Outdoor fireplaces and other types of fire pits are allowed if constructed and located properly. If in doubt, please contact the Fire Department.
"This policy is intended to heighten our fire safety during the hot summer months, and also to reduce unnecessary airborne pollutants during a time period when air quality concerns are at their peak," said Marietta. "Violations of this ban will result not only in a fire department response to put the fire out, but also may include state or local penalties.
"Please help us keep the community, and our lungs, safe during this time period by not having outdoor burning."
For more information on the state burn ban, click here.

If you would like more information on the burn ban,
