Summer is busy in the City of Milton

I can't believe it's June already. The kids are out of school, vacations have started, and
the temperatures are getting warm. It is a great time to get out and enjoy summer!
It seems like just a few weeks ago we were getting ready for Spring Break! Where does
the time go? I guess it flies, though, when you're as busy as we are in Milton this summer.
I mean, just look at this newsletter.
First off, we are very excited to announce that Providence Park will be opening this fall. Many of you have fond childhood memories at the park and we cannot wait to see
future generations utilizing the 42-acre park with hiking trails, a rock-climbing cliff and
lake.
Speaking of future generations in Milton, have you seen the Legacy Milton Initiative? It is a comprehensive, long-term vision with policies, incentives and ideas to help conserve...

Be a part of the Legacy Milton Initiative June 8
Join in the conservation conversation at the Milton City Council Work Session Monday, June 8.
Residents, land and business owners are all needed for the Legacy Milton Initiative's success. Mayor Joe Lockwood and the Milton City Council are working together to help conserve Milton for the future and need you to be a part of developing a plan. Ask questions, voice opinions and hear from your neighbors at the June 8 meeting, starting at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
To learn more about this important effort to keep Milton unique, click here.
Instead of focusing on a single fix, the Legacy Milton Initiative is a comprehensive, long-term vision with policies, incentives and ideas to help conserve the look and feel of Milton. "At the beginning of the Conservation Subdivision Ordinance discussion in Milton, it became apparent that conservation in Milton is much more than a one-size-fits-all solution," said Lockwood.
The Legacy Milton Initiative includes a number of conservation options, including the possibility for a green space bond voted on by citizens, potential impact fees on new developments and credits to incentivize larger lot sizes.
"I, along with the city council and support from our city staff, want to be able to leave a legacy and make a difference in Milton for future generations long after we are gone," said Lockwood.

Thomas Byrd Sr. House grand opening June 10
The City of Milton and Senior Services North Fulton will hold a grand opening ribbon cutting for the Thomas Byrd Sr. House, the new home of the Milton Senior Center, Wednesday, June 10.
The ceremony will begin at 11:30 outside of the Thomas Byrd Sr. House, formerly known as the Hopewell House, at 15690 Hopewell Road. Mayor Joe Lockwood and the Milton City Council will be joined by Fulton County Commissioners Bob Ellis and Liz Hausmann with senior center staff for the ribbon cutting.
Starting at 11:30 a.m., Norman Broadwell, a Milton native, will be on hand to talk about the structure's history.
Parking at the Thomas Byrd Sr. House will be for those with accessibility issues only. All other guests are asked to arrive early to park at Shannondale Farms, 2395 Birmingham Road and ride the provided shuttle to the Thomas Byrd Sr. House.
The City of Milton purchased the site from foreclosure in 2011 for $250,000 in order to save the structure, which is believed to be one of the oldest in North Fulton.
Renovations began in July 2014 for the 2.5-acre site, which contains the nearly 4,000-square-foot, two-story home and dates back to at least the mid-1800s according to local historians.
Senior Services North Fulton will occupy the home during normal business hours thanks to a 2012 agreement. When not in use by seniors, Milton will utilize the space for city-sponsored events and pursue facility rentals for special occasions.

Milton purchases Providence Park for $4,200
The City of Milton purchased Providence Park Tuesday, June 2, for $4,200 from the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.
Thanks to the great assistance of Fulton County Commissioners Bob Ellis and Liz Hausmann, Fulton County Chairman John Eaves and the entire Fulton County Board of Commissioners, Providence Park will be invaluable as part of Milton's ever-expanding stable of parks, greenspace and event facilities.
The park, closed since 2004, was owned by Fulton County since before the city's formation in December 2006. The 42-acre site, located at 13440 Providence Park Drive, includes a lodge, hiking trails, a rock-climbing cliff and a lake. Crews have cleaned it for the last 11 years after testing turned up contaminants in the ground water and soils.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division now deems the clean-up complete, and Milton is more than happy to take possession of the passive-use park and return it to use for residents, said Mayor Joe Lockwood.
"We're really very excited the City of Milton and Fulton County could come to terms everyone found agreeable for this beautiful park," he said. "We look forward to using its rugged terrain and natural beauty for a host of events and programs as soon as this fall."
Jim Cregge, the city's parks and recreation director, said Milton has long contemplated the work needed to bring Providence Park back to a functional state. Staff is already working on renovation plans to ensure residents can enjoy Providence Park in the near future.

Milton Fire Marshal Matthew Marietta would like to remind the community that the state's "burn ban" is in effect through Sept. 30.
The ban, which is enacted because of dry conditions and environmental health regulations, is issued by the state Environmental Protection Division and covers Milton, the rest of Fulton County and a number of other surrounding counties.
The following types of open burning are banned:
- Burning of leaves, tree limbs or other yard wastes
- Burning of vegetative waste from land clearing
- Burning over of forest land by the owners of the land
Please note: Outdoor fireplaces and other types of fire pits are allowed if constructed and located properly. If in doubt, please contact the Fire Department.
"This policy is intended to heighten our fire safety during the hot summer months, and also to reduce unnecessary airborne pollutants during a time period when air quality concerns are at their peak," said Marietta. "Violations of this ban will result not only in a fire department response to put the fire out, but also may include state or local penalties.
"Please help us keep the community, and our lungs, safe during this time period by not having outdoor burning."
For more information on the state burn ban, click here.

If you would like more information on the burn ban,
please email Fire Marshal Matthew Marietta:

This is a great time of year to head outside, take day-trips, and enjoy a summer vacation - but it can also be a great time for burglars to hit empty houses! Before you leave on vacation, check out these tips from the Milton Police Department to help make your travels safer:
- Request a vacation check by calling MPD at 678-242-2570. An officer will stop by and check on your house while you're away and contact you if there are any issues. You can also submit a vacation check request online by clicking here.
- Don't advertise your vacation on social media. Posting travel plans lets people know exactly how long your home will be empty.
- Consider having the Post Office hold your mail. If you're going to be gone longer than a few days, this will keep the mail from piling up and alerting people you're not home - also is a great way to limit the opportunities for someone to grab information out of your mailbox.
- Lock it down! Make sure all windows and doors are secured, before you leave, and unplug any electronics not needed while you are traveling.

Using Craigslist as a way to clean out the garage or attic? It's a great option but can also be a little scary - keep these tips in mind to help make your next craigslist venture a safe one:
- Recruit a friend or family member to go with you to meet potential buyers/sellers. Also consider telling another friend or family member some specifics about where when you're meeting and what time you should be finished.
- Always meet at a public place such as a police precinct. Meet during daylight hours and avoid secluded areas.
- If you have to meet at your residence, have the item(s) outside or in the garage - do not allow strangers into your home.
- Be cautious when buying/selling high value items and trust your instincts - if you think it might be too good to be true, it probably is.
- Have your cell phone handy and keep it charged.

Help bring Crabapple Fest to thousands this fall

This fall the City of Milton and the Crabapple Community Association (CCA) will once again team up to bring Milton the biggest fall festival it has ever seen, Crabapple Fest, and limited sponsorship opportunities are now available for local businesses.
The Crabapple Fest sponsorship packet includes everything potential sponsors need. To download the packet immediately, click here.
There are four levels of sponsorship: Platinum ($5,000), Gold ($2,500), Silver ($1,500) and Bronze ($500). Each features its own perks, including company logo placement on all event banners, advertisements and staff T-shirts, prime booth space and links to your organization from the City of Milton's Web site. Please note, however, that specific inclusion and logo placement are based on sponsorship level.
To assure names and logos are included in promotional advertising, sponsors must be in by Aug. 25. Sponsorships will be taken after this date; however, they will only be added to advertisements scheduled after their approval.
The City of Milton prefers not to exclude any business that wants to sponsor Crabapple Fest. As such, special consideration will be given for sponsors at each level with regard to placement of logos on all advertising and location of booth space at the event.
No direct competitor will be placed near another for advertising or booth location. However, direct competitors may be accepted as sponsors.
Vendor space is also available for 19th century American country furniture, primitive antiques, shabby chic items and unique pieces of art in all mediums - oils, photography, jewelry, textiles, pottery and quilts. To apply, click here to visit the vendor portal hosted by festival partner Crabapple Community Association (CCA).
