We've got a busy summer ahead

It's hard to believe we're already five months into 2015. But boy, isn't May beautiful? For those of you who joined us for a fun night Saturday at the Hometown Jubilee, you saw the perfect mix of spring and summer - warm, but not too hot.
We have a lot going on in the city this summer, and I want to let you know about a few projects. We've got a park opening, substantial work on City Hall, and needed intersection improvements, to name just a few of the exciting projects we've got coming up.

The $9.4 million expansion of Bell Memorial from a 12-acre park with four baseball fields to a nearly 30-acre multi-use facility with both passive and active recreation options is now underway. To view monthly updates of progress on the project, click here. To take a virtual tour of the facility, click here.
The new park design will have four dedicated diamond (baseball/softball) fields with centerfield dimensions of 180, 200, 200 and 280 feet. There will also be two...

Alzheimer's Symposium at City Hall May 19
Join Better Together, Milton's citizen volunteer committee, with the Institute for Advanced Medical Research, Senior Services North Fulton and the Rotary Club of Milton-Windward at Milton City Hall for a free educational seminar covering the full spectrum of Alzheimer's Disease.
This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, in Council Chambers at Milton City Hall. The entire community is invited, said Wayne Boston, community builder for the City of Milton.
"We are thrilled to bring together these partners to help further awareness of Alzheimer's Disease," he said. "Every 67 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops this devastating disorder, and its effect on the community and economy in North Fulton will only continue to grow in the future."
Attendees will learn: the difference between normal forgetfulness and dementia due to Alzheimer's Disease; how to minimize their risk; treatment options available to those diagnosed; and the current state of medical research in the United States. In addition, individuals can sign up to schedule a free and confidential memory screening at the Institute to determine if they might be at risk. They can then take the results to their primary care provider and discuss additional follow-up needs.
The Institute for Advanced Medical Research empowers individuals struggling with neuropsychological conditions to actively participate in their treatment. By educating and informing patients and their families, the team offers them a renewed sense of purpose. Rather than simply being victims of a disease, study participants become health care heroes, creating a personal legacy of advancing medical science.

City seeks veterans' information for Memorial Day
The City of Milton will hold its eighth annual Memorial Day ceremony May 25 and in preparation is adding veterans into the city's registry of service men and women.
Through years of hard work and the generosity of residents, Milton has amassed a list of nearly 700 living and fallen veterans, almost 391 of whom are memorialized with markers placed on Deerfield Parkway the week of the holiday. Any deceased veteran of a Milton family is qualified to be honored with a marker. Information on living veterans will be used for recognition purposes. Living veterans DO NOT receive markers.
Each year residents ask how their family members may be added to the registry. The city does not have access to a government database revealing who served in the military. Instead, we need you to tell us.
If you, a friend or someone in your family is or was a veteran, please fill out the attached form below. You may drop it off at City Hall, fax it to 678-242-2499 or mail it to:
Milton City Hall
13000 Deerfield Parkway
Suite 107A
Milton, GA 30004
Attn: Jason Wright
There is also an online form available anytime at the City of Milton Web site. You may either click here or go to www.cityofmiltonga.us. To access the form, click on the "Find a Form or Permit" tab at the top of the page and choose "Register military veterans' information" from the "Online Forms" section at the top of the page.
Once you give the City of Milton the information, it will be placed in a secure database. The names will then be sent to City Councilman Bill Lusk and the newly formed non-profit Milton Memorial Markers for Veterans, who will personally build, paint, engrave and place the markers.

This year's ceremony features local veterans, the City of Milton Fire Department Color Guard, Taps as performed Bugles Across America, Capt. Donna Rowe as the ceremony's featured speaker, and much more.
The ceremony will conclude with a roll call of local veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Their friends and families are then invited to reflect upon the markers created to remember their legacy and placed along Deerfield Parkway and in Crabapple by Councilman Bill Lusk.
Please start your Memorial Day by joining the City of Milton in remembering those who have served the cause of freedom to their last breath.

Milton Fire Marshal Matthew Marietta would like to remind the community the state's "burn ban" goes into effect Friday, May 1.
The ban, which is enacted because of dry conditions and environmental health regulations, is issued by the state Environmental Protection Division and covers Milton, the rest of Fulton County and a number of other surrounding counties. It lasts until Sept. 30.
The following types of open burning are banned:
- Burning of leaves, tree limbs or other yard wastes
- Burning of vegetative waste from land clearing
- Burning over of forest land by the owners of the land
Please note: Outdoor fireplaces and other types of fire pits are allowed if constructed and located properly. If in doubt, please contact the Fire Department.
"This policy is intended to heighten our fire safety during the hot summer months, and also to reduce unnecessary airborne pollutants during a time period when air quality concerns are at their peak," said Marietta. "Violations of this ban will result not only in a fire department response to put the fire out, but also may include state or local penalties.
"Please help us keep the community, and our lungs, safe during this time period by not having outdoor burning."
For more information on the state burn ban, click here.

Milton Fire-Rescue and its Community Risk Reduction professionals continue making a big contribution to innovation in fire prevention education. Our outreach efforts were recognized this past March when we were invited to demonstrate our inflatable fire safety house and child home safety education program at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center's State Fire Academy. Captains Johnny Gomez and Alex Fortner, along with Milton Communications Manager Angela Thompson, shared our community outreach philosophy to aspiring Fire and Life Safety Educators at the Academy.
Capt. Gomez, who is the department's Public Education Program Manager, continues to enthusiastically look for new ways of reaching the community through safety education while Capt. Fortner advances fire and injury prevention through engineering, inspections and engagement of Milton businesses, schools and our residents. With these two aspects of community safety working together, we can build long-term community resiliency into Milton as it continues to look to a bright future.

Crabapple Fest now taking vendor applications
Crabapple Fest, Milton's long-running and popular art and antique festival, is now accepting vendor applications for the Oct. 3 event.
If you are interested in taking part in this time-honored tradition, click here to visit the vendor portal hosted by festival partner Crabapple Community Association (CCA).
Organizers welcome 19th century American Country furniture, primitive antiques, shabby chic items and unique pieces of art in all mediums - oils, photography, jewelry, textiles, pottery and quilts. Spaces are limited, so apply early.
Once again the festival features kids and entertainment activities across Crabapple Road thanks to a partnership between CCA and the City of Milton.
Crabapple Fest will be held Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Antique vendors, local juried artists and merchants from all over the Southeast will be on hand, in addition to loads of children's rides, games, a full day of entertainment and great local food.
Last year's event had more than 30,000 attendees, and was the biggest festival in Milton's modern history.
Vendor fees are tax deductible as the Crabapple Community Association is a chartered, non-profit organization. Proceeds benefit local community programs, scholarships and non-profit charities.
