Milton Police investigating traffic crash fatality

Cyclist dies from injuries sustained in April 29 crash

MILTON, Ga., May 4, 2015The Milton Police Department is investigating a traffic fatality, which occurred April 29 on Freemanville Road near Dartmouth Road. As a result of injuries sustained in this crash, 42-year-old Jason Young of Canton, died May 2. The driver of the vehicle, John Blankenship, 46, of Canton, has been charged with Reckless Driving and Homicide by Vehicle. 


The crash occurred at 7:36 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29. According to investigators and information from the scene, Blankenship, the driver of a white 1993 Ford Ranger pickup truck, was northbound on Freemanvile Road. At the same time five cyclists were traveling southbound on Freemanvile Road. The driver of the pickup truck crossed over into the southbound lanes in attempt to pass another vehicle. At this point the pickup truck struck two of the cyclists. The other cyclists crashed as a result of the accident. Two of the cyclists were transported to the hospital. The remaining cyclists were treated and released at the scene. Blankenship was cited for improper passing at the scene. Additional charges of Reckless Driving and Homicide by Vehicle were filed against Blankenship on Saturday May 2. He is presently in the Fulton County Jail awaiting arraignment.
