MILTON, Ga., Feb. 12, 2014 - Milton Emergency Manager Matt Marietta urges residents to stay off the roads so Public Works crews can treat them.
"Our residents have done a fantastic job of heeding the warnings and preparing to stay put for this storm," he said. "Now the effort can be focused on making roads as safe as possible for police, fire and utility crews to respond to emergencies."
Roads are iced across the city, and despite efforts overnight to spread salt and sand the continued freezing rain, snow and sleet mean conditions will deteriorate throughout the day.
"This looks to be a long-duration event," said Public Works Director Carter Lucas. "Roads that were pre-treated last night already need more material.
"We're plowing major roads but I don't have the expectation we'll be able to stay completely ahead of it and provide clear roads at any point today."
Lucas said crews are responding to major roads, like Ga. 372, Ga. 140 and Ga 9 first. Second will come heavily traveled local roads and known trouble spots like bridges and shaded hills. Third will be smaller local roads, followed by neighborhoods if time, material and conditions allow.
