Emergency Manager: Stay off roads if possible

Worst of storm expected to hit after 7 p.m., last until Thursday

MILTON, Ga., Feb. 11, 2014 - With a mix of rain, snow and sleet falling across Milton, Emergency Manager Matt Marietta is urging drivers to avoid travel if possible, especially after 7 p.m. when accumulation is expected.

Milton fire, police and public works staff are working closely with county and state emergency management officials to respond to the potentially dangerous winter weather. This includes preparing equipment and material for maintenance of roads and establishment of an emergency operations center at Fire Station No. 43 to coordinate response efforts.

"We encourage residents to listen to state and local news outlets to stay informed on changing weather conditions," said Marietta. "But we expect there to be ice, and lots of it, through at least Thursday. So prepare for possible power outages, stay off the roads, especially this evening and tomorrow, and make sure you have enough medication and other essentials to last at least 72 hours in case stores are closed."

Marietta said current forecasting shows ice and snow accumulating around 7 p.m. tonight. Staying off roads allows Milton's spreader trucks and first responders open access to all roads.

Road response is being prioritized, with bridges, state highways and major arteries addressed first, said Carter Lucas, public works director. After that crews will hit secondary roads, then known trouble spots in neighborhoods if conditions allow.

Milton's Communications Department will send periodic updates on road conditions using CodeRED and e-mail, and will offer frequent advice and answer questions on Facebook and Twitter.
