At a lunar eclipse, your vision is clear - or at least, you are guided by keen instinct; not the wild, emotional intuition of the Moon, but rather the quiet instincts of the Earth. At this lunar eclipse, there is something in you that longs to connect more deeply with the Earth, to drink from her cool waters and lay your head upon her sweet grass. Some long-ago pain has reared up and sent you packing, returning home to mother Earth for solace. As you gaze up at the half-bitten Moon, know that the Earth is offering you something, some smooth block of marble, a piece of wood, a section of clay. Open your instinctive mind, and ask yourself: What is it that wants to be brought into being? And what is the right tool with which to carve it out? - April Elliot Kent

penumbral eclipse

On November 28, 2012 at 6:26am PST we will experience a Full Moon lunar eclipse. This eclipse is a Penumbral or Appulse Lunar Eclipse and will occur at 7 degrees of Gemini/Sagittarius. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth, the Sun and the Full Moon align, with the Earth situated in the middle and casting a shadow on the moon. During an Appulse or Penumbral Lunar Eclipse, the moon never passes through the dark inner core of the Earth's shadow. It only passes through the hazy outer portion of the shadow, known as the penumbra.

Because of the hazy factor, Appulse lunar eclipses are known to be subtle and quite difficult if not impossible to observe, as the lunar disk looks only slightly darker than normal. The moon's light is dimmed but does not go dark due to the fact that the penumbral shadow is not dark enough to black out the sun's light. The effect is similar to a thin cloud passing in front of the moon. This particular Appulse lunar eclipse may manifest as a slight but noticeable darkening of the northern half of the moon.

Those in the Western U.S. and Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, and most of Asia will be able to see the eclipse. Observers in the Eastern United States will miss out because the moon will already have set there when the eclipse begins. For those in the Western United States and Canada, this is an early-morning eclipse and the darkening will be most noticeable between about 7 am PST and 10 am PST. The moon will appear a little higher and the twilight sky a bit darker, perhaps enabling sharp-eyed viewers to better see a 'stain' on the Moon. The northern limb should then be noticeably dimmer than the southern limb. Concentrate your gaze toward the upper rim of the Moon. Look for a dusky shading in the northern half. - Guy Ottewell

appalachia message

The November 28th Appulse Lunar Eclipse (full moon) "first touches Earth's hazy outer shadow (the penumbra) at 12:15 UT. Theoretically people living near and along the spine of the Appalachian mountain chain have a chance to see the wisp of this eclipse as it descends, beginning just before the moon sets while the sun rises in the Eastern time zone. In practice it would be quite impossible for them to observe the eclipse, however, since most of the penumbra is such a light shadow that it makes no visible difference to the brightness of the moon." - Guy Ottewell

For me, the location of the first descent, the touching down, of an eclipse shadow reveals a lot about the energy of that particular eclipse. The recent Total Solar Eclipse over Australia touched down on sacred Aboriginal lands. The greatest eclipse was actually over the Pacific Ocean, but the eclipse had an unmistakable Aboriginal light and essence.

This November 28th Appulse Lunar Eclipse first touches down in APPALACHIA, turning our gaze there. It's a subtle turning but it provides a compelling glimpse: we cannot look at Appalachia without seeing that the poverty there is the equivalent toThird World living conditions - in the United States (http://yhoo.it/Tpd5kj)

"More than 40% of all Appalachia residents are living in poverty, and of the 60% who are not, a large number are living on the borderline of poverty. The poverty rate in the Appalachian Mountains is about three times the poverty rate for all of the U.S. As a result Appalachian residents are more prone to chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol, as well as being more prone to prescription drug addiction and depression. Over 50% of the children living in Appalachia are living in poverty. The highest poverty rate for children is in Owsely, KY, with 65%." http://bit.ly/TpcL5e (Appalachia struggles to overcome poverty http://nbcnews.to/Tpd9AK)

Appalachia is one of the shadows of the United States, something we prefer to remain hidden, our dirty little secret - hidden in plain sight. And Appalachia is a microcosm of the macroscopic problems besetting humanity. In reference to the Nov 14th eclipse, Australian Aborigines and countless indigenous cultures around the world suffer the same poverty and disease that shows up in Appalachia. They are the canary in the coal mine of the end result of our way of life. Cut off from the earth and its balanced approach to life, we fail to thrive in the most fundamental ways.

And indeed, this eclipse reminds us of the current environmental disaster that is waiting to happen, the practice of *fracking* - the epicenter of which is in the Marcellus Shale underneath Appalachia: Fractured Appalachia http://www.fracturedappalachia.org/

A slang term for hydraulic fracturing, *fracking* refers to the procedure of creating fractures in rocks and rock formations by injecting fluid into cracks to force them further open. The larger fissures allow more oil and gas to flow out of the formation and into the wellbore, from where it can be extracted. It is a controversial practice to say the least, as the environmental impact is not yet fully understood. In the regions where fracking takes place, such as the Marcellus Shale formation that underlies much of Appalachia, disturbing personal anecdotes abound of flammable tap water, explosions, spills and other water contamination (http://bit.ly/TpcTld) Some speculate that fracking causes earthquakes in regions not normally prone to them. Fracking is a serious issue in the Appalachian region.

When our gaze was commanded to Australia in the recent Total Solar Eclipse we were reminded by the Aboriginal elder wisdom (untarnished by colonial devastation) that deep reverence for and connection to the land is glaringly absent in our world - and to our peril. We turn a deaf ear to geographical information and awareness of the energy currents of power on this planet and we can't (refuse to?) hear the song from nature which would alert us when things are out of balance.

Full Moons are times of super high energy, and surging emotion across the spectrum. A lunar eclipse intensifies the sense of being overwhelmed, and events are experienced in vivid color. A Lunar Eclipse is a very powerful Full Moon, featuring heightened and possibly volatile emotional energy. Results of past actions reach a point of culmination and fruition, and we have the opportunity for major breakthroughs, emotional release, and new perspectives. Emotional lunar emphasis gives way to the reinstatement of the Solar Will and Purpose. The emotions, ego needs, and karmic forces that were aroused by the Solar Eclipse slowly recede into the background. It is now possible to free yourself from the power of limiting thoughts and beliefs. Especially since this eclipse is in the signs of Gemini (thinking) and Sagittarius (belief systems)

At the time of this eclipse, we have a window of opportunity to gently turn our attention to the poverty of Appalachia and the questions surrounding the extraction of its deeply hidden wealth.

Partial Lunar Eclipse Sept 7, 2006 - Mikelens / the Penumbral lunar eclipse of Nov 28, 2012 will have similar shading in the northern half of the moon, but it will be more subtle.

do we have a pulse?

The November 28 eclipse is a Penumbral lunar eclipse (full moon) as described above. Penumbral eclipses are also called APPULSE eclipses. Appulse is an astronomical term that refers to the close approach of two celestial bodies together in the sky. The two bodies are coming together but they have a minimal amount of contact when they do meet. The energy is held in the *approach* more than in the actual contact. It's like "brushing up against someone" in a crowded room, or *rubbing elbows* with people. A conjunction - direct meeting - occurs at the instant when two bodies share the same space: like going up to someone and hugging them, for instance.

But there's more - the word Appulse originates in the Latin 'appulsus' brought near, from 'appellere' to drive towards, from 'pellere' to drive. It connotes a driving or running toward something, an approach. It holds the energy of striking against something, an energetic motion toward something... to drive, beat, push.

There is energy involved here. Just because an Appulse eclipse is subtle astronomically does not make its psycho-spiritual effects weak or unnoticeable. It is driving home a point and its approach is pushy but unassuming. Perhaps a pickpocket who slides right by you in a crowd and snatches your wallet, or a spy who walks blithely past you and deposits a secret document into your jacket pocket to elude authorities (yes I watch too many Bond movies;) You don't see them coming and what they leave behind can get you into trouble. A drive-by shooting?

As we will see in Part 4 of this newsletter, the most profound meaning of this eclipse comes from its contact with the mystical royal star Aldebaran - also known as The Eye of God or The Eye of the Buddha. What is being deposited into us is a knowing, an inner vision packaged in a wisp of smoke. Have you ever sat in a garden and seen a flash of light out of the corner of your eye, in your peripheral vision? Have you ever woken up with a vague memory of a dream but you can't quite grasp it - then later in the day, in a flash, you remember it? The message of this eclipse is elusive and it involves our intuition and the ability to sense things with our third eye. But it's the closing parenthesis of the November 13/14 eclipse and so it does put a period on the end of the sentence.

In addition to an appulse and a conjunction, there is a third possible meeting between two celestial bodies - when they come so close together that one actually passes over the other. This event is known as an *occultation*. Of course this is what happens in a total solar eclipse or a total lunar eclipse - when the moon covers the sun or vice versa. But an occultation can take place between other celestial bodies besides the moon and sun. Interestingly, at the time that the moon is being appulsed by the sun on November 28th, the moon itself will be OCCULTING the planet Jupiter.

Jupiter can be summed up in one word: BIG. It's the largest planet in our solar system and energetically we say that it expands everything it touches (like Midas). It comes bearing gifts (like Santa Claus). It has a general auspicious feel to it, associated with abundance and magic and helpful people, optimism and hope. Poverty consciousness is at the root of poverty. Is there enough for everyone? Jupiter isn't just enough, it's too much. There is no sense of lack. But overindulgence (such as risky environmental practices) will recklessly strip the wealth and the expansion will collapse in upon itself.

As the sun in Jupiter's home sign of Sagittarius *drives by* the moon in the mental sign of Gemini, the moon is reflecting the energy of Jupiter - abundance, magic, hope and expansion. Making the big, small... the subtle, obvious.

I think a shift has happened within humanity during the time between these eclipses. I think the scales have tipped, ever so slightly toward a more just world for everyone. It is almost imperceptible and the problems are raging more than ever. But something is different. The closed Third Eye of Humanity is fluttering.

The essence (of the cosmos) is a vast living body, of which we are parts.

The sun is a great heart whose tremors run through our smallest veins.

The moon is a great gleaming nerve-center from which we quiver forever.
