From the Prez
What a great evening we had last Saturday at the Wine and Dine! Nothing beats great company, wonderful food, creative mixology, and good weather (thanks Alison and Mark!).
CVHS is one of the many communities we are part of. And interacting with others in that community, in a relaxed atmosphere, is not only fun, it's crucial! It builds relationships we might need now or in the future. It provides you with information you might otherwise never get. And it gives you the reassurance that we are all coping with the same issues.
GENERAL MEETING. If you were not able to attend the Wine and Dine event, we have plenty of other opportunities coming up. The next general meeting is Feb. 16 at 7:30 AM in the CVHS theater. The program is parent to parent, tips and advice for navigating high school and college. Please note this is a morning meeting! We'll have a hard stop at 8:30 AM at the latest because school starts, but we'll continue with a coffee social at a close by location, which we'll communicate at a later time. Hope to see you all there.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. This newsletter is chock full of volunteer opportunities. Some are PTO functions and some are from the general CVHS community. Please read on and take a moment to sign up.

PTO Scholarships for Seniors All seniors are encouraged to apply

This spring, the CVHS PTO will award up to $2,500 in scholarships to members of the Carnegie Vanguard High School Class of 2017. These scholarships will be awarded without regard to GPA or class rank. The PTO wants to reward students who display a desire to learn, provide service and show respect for others, and work hard.
Scholarship awards will be based on a combination of factors, including service to school and community, as well as challenges faced and met. Seeking to honor individuals who best represent the spirit of CVHS, both inside and outside the classroom, the PTO encourages ALL Carnegie seniors to apply.
All complete applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. Applicants selected as semi-finalists will be scheduled for interviews in late April and early May.
Applications are available HERE.
Deadline for applications is midnight on
April 13, 2017
Only electronic applications will be accepted. |
Chaperones needed for NHS event
30 Hour Famine
The Carnegie chapter of the National Honor Society will once again host the 30 Hour Famine locked-in event.
This year, it's going to be Friday, Febr. 24 and Saturday, Febr. 25.
The NHS is looking for parents willing to volunteer their time to chaperone the kids during the evening and night of Friday, Feb. 24 and for the visit to the Houston Food Bank and Cici's Pizza on Saturday. You don't need to spend the night at Carnegie if you're not able. Whatever time you're able to spend as chaperone would be much appreciated. You can sign up here, please consider helping out for a couple of hours.

Class of 2017 Torchy's Tacos Sales - parent volunteers needed
The Class of 2017 is in the home stretch, and has been working very hard to raise money for class activities. The seniors are now selling Torchy's Tacos on Wednesdays to raise funds for graduation, prom, a class trip and more! Parent volunteers are urgently needed to set up and assist with these food sales on Wednesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Also, a parent must be present in order for the seniors to have access to the PTO room for their lunch sales. Please remember that you must be VIP-registered (HISD's Volunteers in Public Schools via houstonisd.org) and have passed a background check before volunteering on campus. If you are interested in volunteering or for more information, click here and also contact Pamela Lemoine, one of the PTO Class Reps coordinating the seniors food sales efforts at 713-628-6615.

Coach Lamane has some cats to adopt
Coach Lamane is looking for someone to adopt some lovely cats from his home. Due to technical limitations, we can't include pix of the cats here, but here are Coach Lamane's descriptions of these lovely animals in need of good homes:
BILLY is a sweet, laid-back boy. Like his sister, Aliyah, he's a grey striped tiger cat, but he's much bigger than his littermates. He likes being petted and playing with his brother and sisters. Billy is not as adventurous as his sister, Aliyah. While he loves our little dog, he's not so crazy about the big monster dog in the kitchen. Billy would probably like to go to a home that has another cat to snuggle with.
COCO is a very sweet Chocolate Brown little boy. Just look at him and he'll start purring. He's the first one to jump in our laps or to cuddle up at bedtime. He needs someone who can give him lots of love and attention, and another cat to cuddle with would be most appreciated. He's the only one who accepted little Isabella from the get-go when she was introduced to the group. His best friend is Lucy.
LUCY is a petite Black and Gold girl. She is the runt of the litter and will probably stay small. Like her brother, Coco, she is very sweet and affectionate - until she finds a bug or a twist-tie, that is, then it's no holds barred. Lucy is very soft and purrs as soon as you pet her. She loves cuddling up with her brother, Coco.
For more information, e-mail Coach Lamane at alamane@houstonisd.org.

The PTO will provide the main dish and parents will provide desserts and fruit/fruit salad. We need one more volunteer for the next lunch this Friday Feb. 10.

Friends & Family Campaign
The PTO continues to raise money to make the Pavilion (pictured above) a reality. The Pavilion will provide all students a wonderful, shady place for lunch, something they are in need of. It will also be used for educational activities and theater. Our target is $25,000 to complete the $100,000 funding needed for the Pavilion. The PTO has already raised the remaining funds through past gifts to the Friends & Family Campaign.
Donations may be made online, by clicking here, or by check made out to "CVHS PTO". Our giving levels are listed online, but the PTO welcomes any donations of any amount!
