From the Prez

Calling all rhino families. The PTO helps students and teachers make things happen at Carnegie. Please read on for ways you can contribute. There are opportunities to attend a party, volunteer for food sales, and donate to the PTO campaign, among the highlights.

The PTO is raising money to finish the school.   The school was designed to have a cover over the outdoor amphitheater, similar to the cover over the patio at the entrance to the second floor roof garden, made out of aluminum slats. When the school was built HISD was not able to fund the amphitheater cover that was originally designed. The PTO has been raising money for this project for several years. Our goal this school year is to complete that fundraising. We need your help!

Please read on below for more details.

Party with the PTO
Rhino Dinner and Wine Party coming up

If you haven't gotten your tickets to the Rhino Dinner and Wine Party yet, it is not to late!

Mark and Alison Levine are gracefully opening their house to us for an evening of fun, food and drinks. Use this opportunity to meet CVHS parents you don't know yet, or catch up with old friends and acquaintances.
There will be vegetarian food options as well as choice of several (non) alcoholic beverages.

Please support your PTO and through it your school and student!

February 4, 7 p.m. at 3714 Aberdeen Way.
Anyone 21 and over is welcome, so bring your friends.

Please click here to register. You can contact Mark Levine, mlevine@wkpz.com if you have any questions.

Friends & Family Campaign

The PTO continues to raise money to make the Pavilion (pictured above) a reality. The Pavilion will provide all students a wonderful, shady place for lunch, something they are in need of. It will also be used for educational activities and theater.  Our target is $25,000 to complete the $100,000 funding needed for the Pavilion. The PTO has already raised the remaining funds through past gifts to the Friends & Family Campaign.

Donations may be made online, by clicking here, or by check made out to "CVHS PTO". Our giving levels are listed online, but the PTO welcomes any donations of any amount!

Please contact Mark J. Levine, First Vice President - Fund Raising at mlevine@wkpz.com or me, Sarah Bittner, President, at president@cvhspto.org if you have any questions.

Food Sales Volunteers Needed

If you would like to help with food sales this semester, there are a few openings on several shifts. The shifts are every first Tuesday, second Friday and third Friday of the month. This is a fun way to get involved at Carnegie by selling Chick-fil-A sandwiches, Vietnamese food and pizza slices at lunch time.

To volunteer, follow the SignUp Genius link here. Please email Mary Beth Yard at mary.yard@att.net if you have any questions. Thanks so much!

Mentors needed

There are still some AP Research and TPSP students who need mentors. The role of a mentor is to assist the student with their research process (methodology) for their original research, and in addition for TPSP a mentor assists with the development of a product that attempts to answer and question or solve a problem. You would meet with the student in person, over the phone, or via Skype (or an equivalent) three times this semester. The student would also email you updates throughout the semester. You don't need to have a background in the specific field itself. Instead, you can help them navigate their methodology.

The remaining projects in need of mentors cover the following topics: linguistics; gene therapy and video games; Texas economics and foreign relations; computer science/complexity theory; sociology/psychology; and society's standards of beauty.

If you think you are able to help, please email hhill4@houstonisd.org.

Hope Farms (Carnegie's former home)

There will be a work day this Saturday at Hope Farms, a community garden that's being established on Carnegie's former campus at 10401 Scott Street. This would be a great opportunity for Rhinos to give back to the community that we called home for our first decade in existence, and a fun way to fill out those community service hours.

As Mr. Dewey wrote on the Carnegie Community FB page: "Carnegie cannot lose it's history just because it has changed locations. This is a great way for current students to connect with the old campus and for alumni who only knew that site to re-connect. This is exciting."

Attention Senior Parents

Your seniors are working hard to raise money for their end-of-year festivities and offset some costs to you. Weekly Whataburger Wednesday food sales, volunteer slots at the Carnegie Coffee Bar, the successful July 4th Bash last summer and senior dues contribute to their budget. Here are some reminders and requests.

  1. Third payment is due to Ms. Ramon, jramon1@houstonisd.org, by January 30. Last payment is March 1. Please follow this link here to the original letter about payment options.
  2. Senior dues cover: Prom Ticket · Six Flags Ticket · Transportation to Six Flags · Meal Voucher for Six Flags · Senior Breakfast · Senior Lunch · Yearbook & Signing Party · Cap & Gown
  3.  Volunteers are still needed for eight more weeks of Whataburger Wednesdays 11:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Seniors will sell food on Wednesdays and parents are needed for assisting and supervising. (Please sign-up on our Signup Genius and VIPS here.)

As parent liaisons, our goal is to keep you up-to-date with the senior class events and requests. Please feel free to contact Pamela or me with any questions. Next month we will include more end-of-year dates.

For more information, call Nicole Shanahan at 281-960-2194 or email nshanahan@hcde-texas.org or email Pamela Lemoine at pamelarobert@comcast.net.
