Food, Glorious Food

This is the week of food news.

First of all, we have the Karbach social event, this Thursday evening, details are at vanguardian.org, volunteer sign up (with FREE attendance) here.

Second of all, we are losing B10 Vietnamese food sales on Thursdays.  B10 has sold their business and the new business is changing the menu.  Last Thursday was our last day of B10.  Our leaders of foods sales, Mary Beth Yard and Maureen Yen, are in the process of finding a new vendor for Thursdays, which may or may not be Vietnamese.

In the meantime, the plan is to double up on Chick-fil-A to have Chick-fil-A on Tuesday and Thursday this week, provided they are agreeable.  So stay tuned and please bear with us as we readjust.  If you have any input you want to give on food sales now is the time.  Just e-mail me and I will pass it on.

Keep Calm and Rhino On!

CVHS' unquenchable holiday spirit

With the holidays rapidly approaching, the PTO once again plans to provide holiday baskets to some of our CVHS families in need.  We are collecting donations of money, gift cards, canned goods and nonperishable items for CVHS families in need. Donations can be turned in to Ms. Alvarenga in the attendance office.

Deadline for turning in canned goods, nonperishables and gift cards is Friday, Nov. 18.  Baskets with turkeys will be distributed Monday, Nov. 21.

For more information, contact Ms. Alvarenga at calvaren@houstonisd.org.

Second Annual BBQ with Officer Fyles

Our BBQ chef
BBQ, beer and a great time, what could be better?.

Please join us for the second annual BBQ dinner at Karbach Brewing Co.,
2032 Karbach Street, Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $25/head, which buys you a 9-oz. souvenir glass, four beers, and Officer Lonnie Fyles' EXCELLENT BBQ and fixings. Last year's event had 100 attendees and was much fun.

All CVHS parents, relatives, friends and neighbors are welcome. All attendees must be 21 or over, so no Carnegie students permitted. This is our first social of the year and a great opportunity to mingle with Principal Moss, teachers, parents and friends.
We are also still in need of 2 volunteers to help serving the food, please sign up (with FREE attendance) here

Get your reservation in by dropping a check at the front desk (noting BBQ dinner) or paying online at

Vote for 2017-18 calendar!

OPTION A                                 OPTION B        The Houston Independent School District would like your input on its 2017-2018 Academic Calendar. There are two drafts up for consideration.

The first option (Draft A) would align with previous years, in which students, teachers, and staff would get three days off for Thanksgiving (Nov. 22-24, 2017) - with school ending on May 31, 2018 for students and June 1, 2018 for teachers.

The second option (Draft B) would give students, teachers, and staff the full week of Thanksgiving off (Nov. 20-24, 2017) - with school ending on June 1, 2018 for students and June 4, 2018 for teachers. Both calendar options retain other traditional HISD holidays, with the exception of the Fall Holiday on Draft B, which becomes a student-only holiday.

Please complete the following survey to select the option you prefer. The survey will be open through Nov. 30.

TPSP/AP Research Mentors needed

Juniors participating in the Texas Performance Standards Project and AP Research classes (meaning ALL juniors) require mentors to help guide them as they pursue their course of independent study and research. Many of the juniors have already found mentors for their projects, but many are still in search.

And this is where YOU come in. Below is a list of projects for which the student has not found a mentor. Can you help? The commitment is small, but the rewards in terms of helping a student make the world a better place via a committed research project are huge indeed.

Here's a quick run-down of the mentor's job:

The research project Mentor's role is NOT
  • to generate a topic for a student.
  • conduct research for the student.
  • write the student's paper.
  • provide unsolicited help.
The research project Mentor's role is to assist answering questions initiated by the student which MAY result in the consultant PROVIDING:
  • feedback regarding a student's choice of research question/project goal, data, information, collection methods, and analysis strategies. (methodology)
  • discussion with the student in establishing objectives.
  • assistance to students in finding possible resources.
  • help with the mechanics of the research process (how to access resources).
  • general feedback about the elements of the student's paper or presentation skills.
Also, the research project Mentor's role is to
  • Sign a Research Project Mentor Commitment Form.
  • Meet with the student twice a grading period. (Meetings can be in person, over the phone, or a video conference)
  • Respond to student emails, which will come at a minimum once every two weeks.
  • Verify meetings with the student during the research project.
  • Perhaps act as a primary resource during the research phase by giving an interview by answering student-created question.

Topics range from home economics, genetic modification, ethics of Mars colonization, and advertising to environmental science, wage gaps, steroid use, psychology and the psychology of conspiracy theories. In all, 32 projects are in need of a mentor as of this writing.

To help, e-mail Ms. Hill at hhill4@houstonisd.org.

Tours, tours and more tours
Thanksgiving is almost upon us, and I'm thankful for all the involved parents who have so generously given of their time to help with magnet tours this fall.  After this week's tour on Thursday, Nov. 17, we skip a week of magnet tours due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  Tours will resume on Dec. 1 and conclude with the last tour on Dec. 8.  Magnet tours continue to be full, and student guides are doing an excellent job of showcasing Carnegie with their knowledge and enthusiasm.  But, they can't do it all on their own.  We continue to need parents to accompany tours and provide a parent's perspective.

Number of Open Volunteer Slots Available as of Wed., Nov. 16:
  • Week of Nov. 17 - 1
  • No tours Thanksgiving Week
  • Week of Dec. 1 - 4
  • Week of Dec. 8 - 3

Over two dozen parent volunteers have helped fill 60 magnet tour volunteer openings to date.  You can sign up for as few (1) or as many dates (3) as your schedule allows. If you would like to help or for more information, click here.
