Learning how to learn
Yesterday I read that there is a handy google doc with a summary of the Coursera course "Learning How to Learn," compiled by reddit user meflou. The document is here. There are some interesting points. The take away I got includes three main techniques: - Tend the biological machine of your brain with social activity, physical activity, good nutrition, and adequate sleep.
- Assist your memory by chunking up what you learn, that is breaking it up into pieces in your notes with an organization that makes sense to you and is easy for you to review.
- Conquer procrastination with the old Nike slogan - Just Do It - because quickly after you start a task anxiety goes down and it becomes easier to focus.
The notes in the Google Doc make for interesting reading and for those who want to go even further, there is the full Coursera course available.

Second Annual BBQ with Officer Fyles
Please join us for the second annual BBQ dinner at Karbach Brewing Co.,
2032 Karbach Street, Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $25/head, which buys you a 9-oz. souvenir glass, four beers, and Officer Lonnie Fyles' EXCELLENT BBQ and fixings. Last year's event had 100 attendees and was much fun.
All CVHS parents, relatives, friends and neighbors are welcome. All attendees must be 21 or over, so no Carnegie students permitted. This is our first social of the year and a great opportunity to mingle with Principal Moss, teachers, parents and friends.
Get your reservation in by dropping a check at the front desk (noting BBQ dinner) or paying online at
vanguardian.org. Please sign up soon! It greatly helps Officer Fyles if we know well before the event how many guests we will have.

More from the Prez on Prop 1
Dear gentle reader, I thought I was done with school funding and would be moving on to lighter topics. But, if you will indulge me one more week, I wanted to share with you some articles that parents have sent to me about recapture. Here are some links to opinion pieces advocating a yes vote on Proposition 1: Former Texas State Rep. Scott Hochberg in the Houston Chronicle here. Jonathan McElvy in The Leader here. The basic arguments are that is better to give up $162M cash for operations than property generating $190M in taxes for operations and facilities and that it is too risky to vote no in an attempt to force the legislature to act.
As was noted at our general meeting Oct. 20, the most important thing is to vote, whichever way you vote by Nov. 8. (The "Against" links from last week's note can be seen here, here, here and here.) Questions? Feel free to contact Sarah Bittner at president@cvhspto.org.

Five weeks left for Magnet Tours help
Inquiring crowds of prospective students and parents keep coming, and Carnegie parents have answered the call for magnet tour volunteers! For the first time ever, we had a full compliment of 10 parent volunteers to help with magnet tours last week. Thanks so much to all who have already signed up to volunteer! Haven't signed up yet? Don't worry! We still have 5 weeks of tours after this week's tour on Thu., Oct. 27. Below are the number of open volunteer slots waiting for YOU to sign up: - Week of Oct. 27 - 1
- Week of Nov. 3 - 4
- Week of Nov. 10 - 3
- Week of Nov. 17 - 4
Interested, but need a little more info before signing up? Magnet tours provide an excellent opportunity to get better acquainted with Carnegie's magnet program and our fantastic CVHS community. Our wonderful student guides do the heavy lifting during the tours, while parent volunteers tag along to add that valuable parent perspective when needed. Please, don't stress about having all the answers. As a parent volunteer, you need only direct inquiries to the appropriate staff member who will be available after the tour to answer questions. Freshman parents continue to be a welcome addition to our volunteer corps, because of their recent experience with the high school magnet application process. T ours take place every Thursday and will continue each week through December 8. There is no tour the week of Thanksgiving. You can sign up for as few (1) or as many dates (6) as your schedule allows. If you would like to help or for more information, click here.
