Voting Against Proposition 1

Up on the November election ballot is a somewhat confusing ballot asking whether you are "FOR" or "AGAINST" HISD taking action to "purchase attendance credits".  A vote "FOR" enters Houston ISD into recapture ("Robin Hood"), sending money to the State of Texas.  Under the state's recapture plan, HISD stands to lose $168 million from their budget, and the annual amount lost by HISD will continue to rise.  This means that CVHS will lose even more from our already lean budget.  This budget cut will mean larger class sizes, fewer electives, and a lack of funding for programs like UIL. This undermines our ability to continue to provide an exceptional learning environment for our students.

Some advocates of voting against include:

Sylvester Turner, Mayor of Houston, who detailed the reasons to vote "AGAINST" at www.VoteAgainstHISDProp1.com/mayorturner.

The Houston Chronicle has written two separate editorials (Sept. 24th and Oct. 7th) on the matter, and the recommendation for Houston voters to vote "AGAINST" on the ballot measure. Links to the stories can be found here and here.

The Houston Federation of Teachers has also come out with a strongly-worded opinion on the need for a "AGAINST" vote. Read that one here.

For a counter opinion, visit HISDParents.org's page here.

Please attend our next PTO general meeting, Thursday, Oct. 20, 6:30 p.m. at the school.  Before our guest speaker (see the announcement further below in this newsletter), we will take a few moments to discuss recapture.   This is the time to bring your questions and/or opinions for discussion, because it is our last PTO meeting before the election.

PTO Meeting: Managing Stress and Anxiety

In addition to a discussion on Proposition 1 (See the President's letter above), Thursday night's meeting (6:30 p.m. in the Cafetorium) will include a presentation from Angelina Brown Hudson, the Program Director with the National Alliance of Mental Illness-Greater Houston, on helping our Carnegie students (as well as their parents!) manage stress and anxiety.

At NAMI, Ms. Brown Hudson's focus is to expand the number of NAMI education classes and support groups available in the Houston area supporting individuals and families who strive for recovery.  She is passionate about increasing the number of individuals who participate in awareness and educational opportunities to learn more about mental health conditions, recovery and to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness diagnoses.

Ms. Brown Hudson knows whereof she speaks. She attended her first NAMI education class in Fall 2000 while navigating resources for her son's brain disorder which  took several years to specifically diagnosis. She has been involved with supporting families for 15 years providing encouragement, referrals and advocacy for those facing mental illness in the areas of education, healthcare, housing and employment.  With NAMI, she works to help families build their emotional stamina, construct support networks and locate resources to sustain recovery and resilience.

We hope you come join us!

Magnet Tours Need You!

Magnet tours are in their third week and going strong!  Parent volunteers are still needed to tag along on these weekly student-led tours and provide that important parent perspective.  Don't stress about having all the answers.  As a parent volunteer, you can direct inquiries to the appropriate staff member who will be available after the tour to answer questions.  Also, freshman parents with recent experience navigating the high school magnet application process would make a very welcome addition to our volunteer corps!  Ten parent volunteers are needed each week to fully staff each tour, and there are still open slots for upcoming tours.  Tours continue each week through Thursday, Dec. 8, but there will be no tour the week of Thanksgiving.

Magnet tours are an excellent opportunity for potential students and their parents to get better acquainted with Carnegie's magnet program and our wonderful CVHS community.  The following number of volunteers are needed for these upcoming tours:
  • Week of Oct. 20
  • Week of Oct. 27
  • Week of Nov. 3
  • Week of Nov. 10
You can sign up for as few (1) or as many dates (7) as your schedule allows.  If you would like to help or for more information, click here.

Second Annual BBQ with Officer Fyles

Please join us for the second annual BBQ dinner at Karbach Brewing Co.,
2032 Karbach Street, Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $25/head, which buys you a 9-oz. souvenir glass, four beers, and Officer Lonnie Fyles' EXCELLENT BBQ and fixings. Last year's event had 100 attendees and was much fun.

All CVHS parents, relatives, friends and neighbors are welcome. All attendees must be 21 or over, so no Carnegie students permitted. This is our first social of the year and a great opportunity to mingle with Principal Moss, teachers, parents and friends.

Get your reservation in by dropping a check at the front desk (noting BBQ dinner) or paying online at
vanguardian.org. Please sign up soon! It greatly helps Officer Fyles if we know well before the event how many guests we will have.

For questions email: Mark Levine at mlevine@wkpz.com
