Don't get stressed out!

Please mark your calendars for the next PTO general meeting, Oct. 20, 6:30 p.m. in the cafetorium.  Our invited speaker is Ms. Angelina Hudson-Brown of NAMI Houston who will present a talk on Managing Stress. A topic we, as Carnegie parents, are confronted with whether we like it or not!

Our general meeting agenda before the speaker will include an informational update on Recapture ("Robin Hood") school funding.  As HISD parents, we all need to be focusing on this matter, which can be confusing even to some of our smart Carnegie parents!

To learn more on Recapture, please come to the PTO meeting, but there are also plenty of places to find information. Here's a quick run down:

Off the Kuff: HISD parent Charles Kuffner blogs on the topic here. Kuffner also recorded an audio interview with HISD Board general counsel David Thompson about the need for people to vote "No" on the ballot measure. You can hear that interview here.

The Houston Chronicle has written two separate editorials (Sept. 24th and Oct. 7th) on the matter, and the recommendation for Houston voters to vote "No" on the ballot measure. Links to the stories can be found here and here.

The Houston Federation of Teachers has also come out with a strongly-worded opinion on the need for a "No" vote. Read that one here.

For our district, and our schools, we need to keep the pressure on this issue all the way to election day on November 8th.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Oct. 20th. As always,

Keep Calm and Rhino On!

Second Annual BBQ with Officer Fyles

Please join us for the second annual BBQ dinner at Karbach Brewing Co.,
2032 Karbach Street, Thursday November 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $25/head which buys you a 9-oz. souvenir glass, four beers, and Officer Lonnie Fyles' EXCELLENT BBQ and fixings. Last year's event had 100 attendees and was much fun.

All CVHS parents, relatives, friends, and neighbors are welcome. All attendees must be 21 or over, so no Carnegie students permitted. This is our first social of the year and a great opportunity to mingle with Principal Moss, teachers, parents, and friends.

Get your reservation in by dropping a check at the front desk (noting BBQ dinner) or paying online at
vanguardian.org. Please sign up soon! It greatly helps Officer Fyles if we know well before the event how many guests we will have.

For questions email: Mark Levine at [email protected]

Magnet Tour Crowds = Need for More Volunteers

As always, Carnegie's magnet tours are very popular.  We had a full house in the theater for the opening presentation last week.  Afterward, 10 student-led tours did an excellent job of introducing potential students and their parents to the Carnegie campus and our fantastic Rhino community.  Ms. Moumni, Magnet Coordinator, very much appreciates all parent volunteers who have stepped up to help out with magnet tours so far.

Ten parent volunteers are needed each week to fully staff each tour, and there are still open slots for upcoming tours. Remember, the student tour guides do the heavy lifting during the tours.  Parent volunteers are needed to tag along and provide the parent perspective, as needed.  Worried about having all the answers?  Don't be!  As a parent volunteer, you can direct inquiries to the appropriate staff member who will be available after the tour to answer questions.  Also, freshman parents with recent experience navigating the high school magnet application process would make a very welcome addition to our volunteer corps!

The following weeks still need helpers:
  • Week of Oct. 13
  • Week of Oct. 20
  • Week of Oct. 27
  • Week of Nov. 3
You can sign up for as few (1) or as many dates (8) as your schedule allows.  If you would like to help or for more information, click here.
