Calling all Rhinos

The printed student directory produced by the PTO will be headed to press after the end of this week, so please take a moment to sign up or to confirm your family's entry by Sept. 30.

So far this year, the PTO has welcomed 290 new members to the newsletter list for a total of 1,402 recipients. And the PTO has welcomed 107 new students to the directory database for a total of 452. Counting in siblings, the total number of families in the directory database is 415, of whom 308 have confirmed.

Confirmation of your listing in the directory is necessary for you to be included in the printed directory, even if you have already signed up. So please do confirm your listing. Also, signing up for the directory is necessary for you to get an email requesting confirmation.

This year we gave freshman families a new option, to opt in to the PTO via the 9th grade email list signup. So far we have ported all of those families into our newsletter list. But, if you were in that group, you will still need to separately sign up for the directory. This is so that PTO does not share information without your consent.

So as convenient as it might be to automatically sign up PTO families receiving the newsletter for the directory, it is not the approach we are taking. We ask you to please take the active step to enroll separately in the directory.

Details and links for signing up or confirming in the directory follow below.

Also, if you contribute to Friends and Family by Sep. 30 you still can be recognized in the directory.   As of last Thursday Friends and Family contributions totaled $13,600 out of our goal of $35,000.  After you confirm your entry in the directory you will be taken to a donation page. Alternately you can donate at vanguardian.org, or drop off a check to CVHS PTO at school with memo Friends and Family.  More details and a list of contributors follow below.

School funding update

You may have read the special edition PTO newsletter sent out Sept. 19th on school funding. The Nov. 8 ballot measure on school funding has been increasingly hitting the news. Here are a couple of links.

Texas Tribune "Analysis: A Game of Chicken Between Texas, Its Biggest School District" here.

Houston Chronicle "Robbing HISD" here.

There are six weeks until Election Day. Please read up on school funding and spread the word to vote "No" on "purchasing attendance credits," which would in actuality cost the district hundreds of millions of dollars that should stay in HISD.

Students who have turned 18 can register to vote in the school library, but the voter registration deadline of Oct. 11 is coming up fast. Ms. Paget in the library can help your 18-year-old register to vote (you too, if for some reason you are not yet registered).

Rhino directory

The best way to be in the "know" is to provide your information in the PTO membership and student directory site. Don't miss out on having your family included!

New families, families who've never signed-up before or returning families with only a new student enrolled this year - go to the following URL: https://www.myschoolanywhere.com/new-family.a5w?fam=CarnegieVanguardHighSchool6902

Families who have a returning student and who had their information listed last year, you should have received a confirmation email already. You can add an additional student when you confirm. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Moreno at [email protected] or 713-290-1568

NMSI money available
Come and get it!

NMSI checks are here. Congratulations!  NMSI was a one year program for 2015 - 2016 supported by HISD. Students who took an AP exam in a qualifying course receive $100 for a passing AP score. Students know if they were in a NMSI class last year.

Current students should go by Ms. Matsu's office, room 134, to pick up their checks.

Class of 2016 - you can come by in person or have a family member pick it up. Have the person email or call before they come; Ms. Matsu is on and off campus a lot and is the ONLY person handing out checks. If you are sending someone, please email her to let her know who will be collecting the check. Checks won't be released without information about who it should be released to. Another option is to mail it (at your cost). Email to discuss this option:  [email protected]

Magnet Tour Help Needed

Magnet tours are an great way for potential students and their parents to get better acquainted with Carnegie's magnet program and our fantastic Rhino community! The parent perspective is an important one and our Magnet Coordinator, Ms. Moumni, has requested 10 parent volunteers for each weekly tour. Tours start next Thursday, Oct. 6, and continue each week through Thursday, Dec. 8. (Note: There are no tours Nov. 24 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.)

Thanks to those parents who have already signed up to help, so far 21 of 90 volunteer slots have been filled! The following number of slots remain open for the month of October:
  • Week of Oct. 6 - 5
  • Week of Oct. 13 - 7
  • Week of Oct. 20 - 9
  • Week of Oct. 27 - 4

Tours will include a presentation in the CVHS theater in the Fine Arts Building, followed by student-led tours. While the students do the heavy lifting during the tours, parent volunteers tag along to add the parent perspective when needed. Freshman parents are also welcome as they have recent experience with the high school magnet application process. You can sign up for as few (1) or as many dates (9) as your schedule allows.

If you would like to help, click here to sign up or for more information.

Volunteer chaperones needed

NHS is going on a service field trip to Galveston Oct. 28th to help with beach/state park clean-up. We are looking for parent volunteers who can help chaperone.

Can you help? If so, please contact Ms. Amalia Masiglat at [email protected].
