Listen & Learn Tour
Come meet the new boss

HISD Board of Education trustees will be hosting a series of town hall meeting with newly appointed HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza.

Superintendent Carranza will be available to listen to input from the community about the district's future and learn about key issues that are important to stakeholders.

Nine meetings have already been held, with 11 still to come. The closest meeting to Carnegie still to come will be at Lamar High School at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21.

There are opportunities at the Listen and Learn meetings to ask questions and speak out. The following are meetings hosted by Trustee Diana Dvila, whose District VIII territory includes CVHS:

Sept. 21 at 6 pm at McReynolds Middle School
Sept. 27 at 6 pm at Austin High School

Magnet Tour Help Needed

Calling all volunteers! Parent volunteers are needed to help with weekly Magnet tours, starting Oct. 6th and continuing each week through Dec. 8th. Tours will be held on Thursday of each week except for Nov. 24, which is Thanksgiving.

Tours will include a presentation in the CVHS theater in the Fine Arts Building followed by student-led tours. Parents volunteers are needed to accompany and assist with these weekly tours.

Magnet tours are an excellent opportunity for potential students and their parents to get better acquainted with Carnegie's program and our wonderful CVHS community. The parent perspective is an important one and our Magnet Coordinator, Ms. Moumni, has requested 10 parent volunteers for each weekly tour. That's 100 volunteer slots that need to be filled!

You can sign up for as few (1) or as many dates (10) as your schedule allows. If you would like to help, click here to sign up or for more information.

Volunteer chaperones needed

NHS is going on a service field trip to Galveston on October 28th to help with beach/state park clean-up. We are looking for parent volunteers who can help chaperone.

Can you help? If so, please contact Ms. Amalia Masiglat at [email protected].

Prism marking Ally Week

Prism, Carnegie's LGBT club, is celebrating national Ally Week from Sept. 26-30. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by the cafeteria at lunch and sign the ALLY pledge to support LGBT students. Allies will receive rainbow ribbons for their lanyards while supplies last.

For more information about ALLY WEEK click www.glsen.org/allyweek.

Do you know a remarkable Rhino?

Do you know a Carnegie Vanguard employee that has gone above and beyond? Do you want to honor someone at CVHS for their stellar service? Nominate that CVHS employee by filling out the form at this link: Employee of the Month nomination form.

The selection of the employee of the month will be made by a committee consisting of one teacher, one staff member and one administrator. If any of those individuals is nominated, then a replacement for that individual will be asked to stand in on the committee for that month.

Picture retakes

If your Carnegie student missed picture day this past Monday, or when the pictures come in, there's a previously unseen problem with the image (Hey, we've all been there.), no need to worry.

Picture retakes have been scheduled for Oct. 24th for anyone who might need one.

If you have any questions, e-mail Ms. Paget at [email protected].

Colleges want Carnegie

Every year, a host of college reps head to the Houston area, and our campus in particular in search of the best we have to offer to apply to their schools. This year is no different as Ms. Chapman, Mr. Frau and Ms. Hooker have put together an incredible list of opportunities.

We are already a week into this process, but here is the remaining schedule. Juniors have all been informed of this, but everyone else should also know if for no other reason than to get information on the schools in question. As Ms. Chapman informed the students, they should be willing to give a hearing to any of these schools, whether they've heard of them or not (ESPECIALLY if they've not heard of them).
