Textbooks! We gotcher textbooks here! And laptops too!
The school year is almost here, and the campus is drowning in textbooks and laptops. It worked so well last year, so the school is once again offering A SPECIAL DEAL: Textbooks for free and laptops for $25.
Not that the school is suddenly in the book and laptop sales business. The staff just wants to make sure that all students get to the first day of school (8 days and counting...) with all of their textbooks and laptops distributed to them. Here's the schedule:
Seniors and sophomores: Monday, Aug. 15, 9 a.m. to noon
Juniors: Tuesday, Aug. 16, 9 a.m. to noon Freshmen: Wednesday, Aug. 17, 9-10 a.m. for 9th graders NOT attending Fish Camp and 10 a.m., which is the arrival time for freshmen attending Fish Camp. PowerUP Laptops will be distributed with textbooks. You must have $25 in cash along with the completed and parent-signed form, which can be downloaded on the Carnegie Community Facebook page here. Parents may come to pick up books, laptops and locker assignments if the student can't make it for some reason. Please, please, please only show up on the date assigned. The staff is only set up to distribute books and laptops on the days assigned to the specific grade levels. If for some reason you simply cannot make these dates, don't worry as the students can do all of this during the first week of school. Not exactly Option A, as the sooner they get the books and computers, the better, but doable. |
Fish Camp this week
Incoming students, it's about to be your time to join the Rhino crash.
Students should arrive at CVHS by 10 a.m. this Wednesday, Aug. 17. They will be organized into cabins, pick up class schedules, issued textbooks receive locker assignments, receive the PowerUP laptop and meet the freshmen faculty.
Students need to bring a lunch for this day. Along with your upper class counselors and chaperones, you will board buses at 2 p.m. and depart for Camp Cullen by 2:30 p.m. Students will arrive back on campus on Friday, Aug. 19, around noon.

Earn money for your club
Carnegie Clubs, the PTO is offering you a great opportunity to earn money to fund your activities.
We are launching a new coffee bar at school which will be operated each week by a different club. Clubs will earn money for operating the bar. Also, by doing so, your club will gain an advantage if you request additional funds from the PTO for any activities during the year.
Many weeks have already been claimed by various clubs, but there are (as of this writing) 10 weeks during the school year still available, so ACT NOW!
For those of you buying coffee at the coffee bar, please remember to bring either $1 bills or quarters.

Deadlines approaching
Michael Phelps turned this face into gold medal preparation. Don't let your Rhinos get caught unprepared for their classes, though. Just as a reminder, summer assignments and reading still need to be finished by the first day of school. Also, supply lists have been posted, so everyone should be able to make it to the first day of school well-provisioned and ready.
Check out the summer assignment, reading and supply lists at the website here.

Open House/PTO meeting Aug. 25
Don't forget to mark your calendars for the first PTO meeting followed by a chance to get to know your Rhino faculty and staff first hand at the CVHS Open House, starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25.
A brief PTO meeting will be held in the Cafegymnatorium. Following that, you will all be released to follow a highly-compressed version of your student's (or students') schedule, where you will get to meet teachers and learn first-hand why this school is the special place it is.
We hope to see you all there!

Volunteers in the Public Schools
At this point, most of you have had children in Houston ISD for some time, and know the VIPS drill. However, just in case you need a refresher, here we go:
Everyone who wishes to volunteer on a Houston ISD campus MUST register at the Volunteers In the Public Schools website here. All registrants must pass a standard criminal history background check.
Following that, you will be able to join in the on-campus Carnegie community and/or volunteer on any Houston ISD campus.
If you've already followed all of these steps, congratulations! Click here to volunteer at CVHS.

Parent and Family Socials
In addition to our Friends and Family Campaign (more on that here), the CVHS PTO hosts three social fundraisers each school year. These FUN- and fundraising events enable the PTO to support our great school while socializing with other school supporters. BBQ Social with Officer Fyles at Karbach: $25/Person (Adults). Please join us in early November (most likely Thursday, Nov. 3) at Karbach Brewery. Our own Officer Fyles will prepare his delicious barbeque as we enjoy Karbach's beer garden. Price includes BBQ, beer glass and a few beer tokens. You do not have to be a CVHS parent to attend, but must be over 21. Wine and Dine Party: $65/Person (Adults). Good times and conversation at the Levine household with plenty of food and great wine. Expected date is the end of January 2017. BINGO Night: $1/Bingo cards (Family-friendly). We will host our second annual BINGONight in April 2017. Exact date to be announced in the fall. Join us for the family fun. For more information, or to purchase tickets for these events, click here.

PTO Corporate Giving Campaign
The PTO is establishing a committee to develop and implement a strategy for Carnegie's future through a corporate giving campaign. We invite anyone interested in participating to contact Mark Levine, PTO VP of Fundraising, at mlevine@wkpz.com |
Friends and Family Campaign
The CVHS PTO Friends and Family Campaign is an important part of our overall PTO fundraising program. Funds raised by the PTO are used for ongoing campus maintenance and improvements, student clubs and activities support, special educational programs, school-wide social events, faculty supplies and support, and much more. Please consider supporting these endeavors by making a tax deductible donation to the Carnegie Vanguard PTO. In the 2016-2017 school year, the PTO plans to dedicate a substantial portion of the Friends and Family Campaign to the construction of a Pavilion in the courtyard. Our giving levels are: - Carnegie Champions, $2,500+
- Principal's Circle, $1,000-$2,499
- Courtyard Cadre, $500-999
- Balcony Bunch, $250-499
- Green Roof Gang, $100-249
However, we are of course happy to accept donations of any amount. All donations at or above $100 are recognized on the PTO website and directory (if received by Sept. 10). All donations qualify as charitable tax deductions. For more, or to donate, click here.
