Correction to Underclassmen Awards Information

Underclassmen Awards Ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. on May 16th, not May 9th as reported yesterday.

Message from the President

Our home is full again as our 2015 graduate has found his way back home for the summer. After our parental debrief of the first year of college, I'm happy to report yet another successful first year thanks to the strong preparation he received at CVHS. I also realized that having some of the academic pressure off allowed him to really enjoy and deal with all the other things that your first year away at college throws at you. So senior parents, enjoy the awards banquet next Monday as the slide to graduation is getting steeper and the launch to college imminent, yet you can take comfort in the knowledge your student is ready.

The two-week countdown to the end of school has begun for all of us, so whether you have graduates or students rising to the next grade, you've got a busy schedule these next two weeks. Although our PTO sponsored events are over for the school year, I'm happy to announce we have two major projects well under way thanks to the generosity of our families. We have raised enough funds to contract the building of the courtyard pavilion cover (although the final payment still needs your help!). We hope to accomplish this over the summer break, assuming we can get HISD to do their approvals. If not, the December holiday break is our backup date.

In addition, we believe we have found a solution to the coffee bar. A generous donation from the Wagner family to establish a coffee bar/hydration station back when the school was being built has gone unused as the final school design did not accommodate a good location to operate such a venture. Thanks to hard work of several past PTO presidents and our behind-the-scenes facility guys (Brent Nyquist and Kevin McCarthy), we should have a solution in place when school starts up in the fall.

Keep Calm and Rhino On!
Joan Khosla

It's time to celebrate the class of 2016!
Senior awards banquet May 16th

This year's awards banquet will be a seniors-only event. We invite all 12th graders and their families to attend a dinner and ceremony celebrating their accomplishments. Teachers will present awards, the PTO will announce scholarship winners, and the Class of '16 will make some special presentations.

Dinner starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15, and can be purchased HERE, or by leaving a check with names of attendees in the front office to the attention of the PTO. You must purchase a ticket if you plan to eat.

The awards ceremony begins at 7 p.m. No ticket is required to attend the ceremony, but you'll need one to eat.

We want everyone in the Class of 2016 to come! If you would like financial assistance for dinner tickets, email or speak privately to Mr. Holloway.

ALL SENIOR ATTENDEES WILL BE ENTERED INTO A GIFT CARD DRAWING.  PLAN TO BE THERE!

Grades 9-11 Awards Ceremony

Awards for students in grades 9-11 will be presented during an assembly at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 16 in the cafeteria.  Parents who would like to attend are welcome.  Space will be limited, but there will be standing room in the back.

CVHS Theatre heads to UIL State!
Final competition May 25 in Austin

CVHS Theatre has advanced to State in the UIL One Act Play competition. Please come out and support our Rhinos as they present their fantastic work on the play "Holy Day."

The UIL Class 6A State Finals will be held at Bass Concert Hall, 2350 Robert Dedman Dr., on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin Wednesday, May 25, starting at 4 p.m. For full details click here.

You can get a chance to see CVHS Theatre perform "Holy Day" before the state competition. A special performance has been scheduled at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, 4001 Stanford, Friday, May 20, at 7 p.m. Tickets will be $10 for students and $15 for adults. There will be various food trucks as well, so come early!

For more information on the May 20 performance, click here.

Congratulations to our Rhino thespians!

Graduation Information

Graduation will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 27th at the Kingdom Builders' Center, 6011 W Orem Dr, Houston, TX 77085.

Graduates should plan to arrive by 5:30 p.m.  Families are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time to the venue due to rush-hour traffic.  All guests will need to pass through security screening upon arrival.

No tickets are required, and graduates may invite as many guests as they like.  Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.   The ceremony is expeted to last approximately 90 minutes.

More information will be sent home with the Seniors soon.  Stay tuned!

Attention future drivers!

Students who plan to obtain learners' permits or drivers' licenses this summer will need to request a Verification of Enrollment (VOE) from the front office.  YOU MUST REQUEST YOUR VOE DURING THE LAST 5 DAYS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR for it to be valid all summer.  VOEs requested prior to the last 5 days of school will expire after 30 days.

Rhinos helping others

A Carnegie family was affected by the recent flood, and as we know, what affects one of us affects all of us here at CVHS. The school is collecting donations to help this family out in this time of need.

Donations can be taken to the front office. For questions, contact Ms. Alvarenga in the front office at calvaren@houstonisd.org.

PTO Corporate Giving Campaign

The PTO is establishing a committee to develop and implement a strategy for Carnegie's future through a corporate giving campaign.

We invite anyone interested in participating to contact Mark Levine, PTO VP of Fundraising, at mlevine@wkpz.com

Friends and Family Campaign Donors

THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS

We'd like to take a moment to thank so many members of our community for their support of our Friends and Family Campaign.    This years campaign is raising money for a covered outdoor pavilion in the CVHS courtyard.  This will be a beautiful and functional addition to our existing amphitheater, and will allow us to use the space in more ways.

This effort is spearheaded by CVHS parents Kevin McCarthy and Brent Nyquist, and we are grateful to them for the generous donation of their time and talents.

Our Friends and Family Campaign goal for the 2015-2016 school year is $40,000.    Together we have raised nearly $27,000 to date.   Please consider a tax-deductible donation to the CVHS PTO.
